In the glitzy world of cinema, where fame often runs in families, lyricist Sameer’s journey stands apart—a tale of rebellion, pain, perseverance, and destiny.
He wasn’t handed success on a silver platter, nor did he bask in his legendary father’s glory. Instead, he carved his own path in Mumbai’s unforgiving film industry, armed with nothing but a pen, courage, and an unyielding dream.
His father, Anjaan, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated lyricists, had himself struggled for nearly two decades before his career-changing song “Khaike Paan Banaras Wala” turned him into a household name.
Scarred by his own battles, Anjaan sternly warned his son never to step into the world of poetry or films. Their relationship was distant—so much so that Sameer barely saw him a handful of times while growing up.
“Once, someone placed me on his lap,” Sameer recalled, “and it felt odd yet comforting. He was like a stranger to me. He would only tell me one thing: never become a poet, never join the industry.”
But Sameer was a rebel. He refused to let fear dictate his destiny. At just 23, he boarded a train to Mumbai, determined to create his own identity.
He didn’t seek his father’s help. He didn’t even inform him. Instead, he quietly began his journey in the city of dreams, embracing hunger, poverty, and loneliness.
For months, Sameer lived in a tiny chawl, sharing a washroom with strangers, while his father lived luxuriously in a Juhu bungalow just miles away.
“My family cried when I left,” he shared. “They thought they had already lost one son, and now they were losing another. But my dream was bigger than my fear. Every morning I woke up hungry, but my passion kept me alive.”
The struggle was brutal. He wore a shirt worth Rs 10, wrote articles for Rs 500, and often went to bed without food. Lunch was a meagre plate of puris “smuggled” for him by a kind man at a Khar station restaurant.
Dinner was often just a banana. “I didn’t know how to cook. Tea and biscuits became my breakfast,” he said. Yet, he refused to surrender.
When his mother discovered the conditions he was living in, she wrote a scathing letter to his father, who was shocked to learn that his son had been secretly living in Mumbai all along.
Relatives revealed Sameer’s location, leading to an emotional reunion—their first true meeting as father and son. “He had no choice but to support me,” Sameer recalled. “But I was full of anger that day. I had already challenged life itself. I wasn’t going to take shortcuts or rely on anyone’s mercy.”
Sameer’s relentless spirit turned his pain into poetry. His words began resonating with millions, and soon, he became one of the most successful lyricists in Bollywood history, penning thousands of unforgettable songs.
Today, his story is more than just a tale of struggle; it is proof that destiny bows before courage. Sameer’s life teaches us that no dream is too big, no pain too great, and no challenge too insurmountable if one refuses to give up.
