PRAYAGRAJ — The investigation into the ragging incident at the Sir Sunder Lal Hostel of the University of Allahabad has reached a crucial point.
The four-member inquiry committee, formed following a formal complaint received on the national anti-ragging portal earlier this week, has submitted its detailed report to the Chief Proctor on Saturday.
The report identifies Vaibhav Kumar, an MA (Political Science) first-year student, as the primary accused in the case. Vaibhav is the son of Rakesh Kumar and a resident of Hanspuram, Naubasta, Kanpur Nagar.
Findings of the Investigation Committee
The internal committee, comprising Dr. Atul Narayan, Dr. Meenakshi Joshi, Dr. Shiv Kumar Yadav, and Dr. Manish Kumar Gautam, found that Vaibhav Kumar was illegally residing in Room No. 45 of the Sir Sunder Lal Hostel.
His name, notably, was absent from the official list of postgraduate students authorized for hostel accommodation as per records issued by the Dean of Student Welfare (DSW).
The committee confirmed that the initial complaint received through the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) anti-ragging portal had alleged that a group of senior students was harassing freshers in the hostel. Upon inquiry, Vaibhav’s active involvement was clearly established, making him the prime suspect.
Subsequent Misconduct and Disciplinary Violations
Further aggravating his position, Vaibhav allegedly misbehaved with Dr. Pawan Sharma, the hostel warden. According to the report, he went to the Department of Geography, where Dr. Sharma was present, and verbally abused and threatened him.
Dr. Sharma promptly reported the incident to the Chief Proctor at 3:15 p.m. on October 10, citing serious indiscipline and intimidation by the student.
Following this, the university administration issued a show-cause notice to Vaibhav on October 21, asking him to explain his conduct and the reasons for violating hostel norms and university discipline.
Background of the Case
The ragging episode came to light three days prior when a first-year student complained to the GC’s national anti-ragging portal, describing instances of mental harassment and intimidation by seniors.
The Chief Proctor’s office immediately constituted the four-member fact-finding committee to verify the claims and recommend disciplinary action.
The inquiry established that Vaibhav’s unauthorized stay in the hostel enabled him to exert influence over junior students and create an atmosphere of fear.
His subsequent confrontation with a faculty member has added to the seriousness of the case, reflecting a pattern of defiance and aggression.
Action Recommended
The committee has reportedly recommended strict disciplinary action, including suspension and expulsion from the hostel, pending further approval from the university authorities.
The Chief Proctor’s office has also suggested that Vaibhav’s case be referred to the University Disciplinary Board for final adjudication, with the possibility of notifying law enforcement if criminal intimidation or abuse is established under anti-ragging regulations.
University’s Stand
The university administration has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward ragging, emphasizing that unauthorized occupancy and misbehavior with faculty will be treated as grave offences. Officials said further steps would be taken after reviewing Vaibhav’s written response to the show-cause notice.
A senior university officer commented, “We cannot allow the culture of fear or entitlement to creep into academic spaces. Hostel life must remain safe, inclusive, and respectful for all students.”
