Australia has been plunged into shock after a deadly mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach was formally declared a terrorist attack by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described the incident as a “devastating act of antisemitic terrorism that has struck at the very heart of the nation.”
Speaking with visible anguish, Albanese said the violence was a deliberate and targeted assault on Jewish Australians, carried out on the first day of Hanukkah, making the timing and intent unmistakable.
“This was an act of evil — antisemitism, terrorism — directed at innocent people celebrating their faith,” he said.
Twelve Dead, Dozens Injured in Hanukkah Celebration Turned Bloodbath
At least 12 people were killed when gunfire erupted during a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most popular public spaces. The attack triggered chaos and panic as celebrants and bystanders fled for safety.
The New South Wales Police Force confirmed that 29 people, including two police officers, were rushed to hospitals across Sydney. Several of the injured remain in serious condition.
Authorities said two suspects are confirmed so far:
- One attacker was shot dead at the scene
- The second is in police custody, hospitalised in a life-threatening condition
Police are also investigating whether a third assailant may have been involved, keeping the terror alert at an elevated level.
Attack Clearly Targeted Jewish Community: Police
Senior police officials said early evidence suggests the assault was specifically aimed at Sydney’s Jewish community. Investigators have officially categorised the incident as a terrorist attack, citing the timing, choice of target, weapons used, and the scale of violence.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the attackers, stating that investigations are ongoing and sensitive.
Civilian Hero Tackles Gunman, Saves Lives
Amid the horror, a moment of extraordinary bravery emerged.
A widely circulated video appears to show a man charging one of the gunmen, disarming him, and pinning him to the ground during the attack.
The rescuer has been identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner.
Police say his actions likely prevented a far higher death toll. Ahmed was reportedly shot during the struggle and is currently receiving medical treatment, according to Channel 7.
Authorities praised his courage, calling it an act of selfless heroism in the face of terror.
Global Condemnation, India Stands Firm Against Terror
World leaders have begun reacting to the massacre, expressing outrage and solidarity with Australia.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned the attack in a post on X, reiterating India’s “zero tolerance for terrorism” and reaffirming support for the global fight against all forms of extremist violence.
Australian Prime Minister Albanese also posted on X, stating:
“Our thoughts are with the Jewish community in Sydney and everyone affected by this tragedy. Violence and hatred have no place in Australia.”
Massive Investigation Underway
Police have sealed off large sections of Bondi Beach and surrounding areas as forensic teams comb the scene. Authorities have urged the public to share any video footage, photographs, or information that could assist investigators.
Security has been heightened across Sydney, particularly around religious sites and public gatherings, as a precaution.
As Australia mourns, the attack has reignited urgent national and global conversations about terrorism, antisemitism, and public safety, with leaders warning that such hatred must be confronted decisively and without hesitation.
