In a chilling case that has shaken Bengaluru, a 31-year-old surgeon has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, Dr. Kruthika M. Reddy, a 29-year-old dermatologist, by administering a lethal dose of the anesthetic drug Propofol.
The incident occurred six months ago, but it was only after a thorough investigation that the true nature of her death was uncovered.
Dr. Kruthika was found unresponsive at their residence in the Munnekollal area on April 24. Initially, her death was believed to be from natural causes, as she had been receiving treatment for gastritis from her husband, Dr. Mahendra Reddy, a general surgeon at Victoria Hospital.
He had administered intravenous medication to her between April 21 and April 23. However, her sister, Dr. Nikitha Reddy, a radiologist, insisted on a post-mortem, suspecting foul play.
The subsequent forensic analysis revealed the presence of Propofol in Dr. Kruthika’s system, leading to the reclassification of her death as a homicide.
Investigators believe that Dr. Mahendra exploited his medical knowledge and access to hospital resources to procure the anesthetic, which is typically restricted for use in operating theatres.
He allegedly administered the drug under the guise of treatment, ultimately causing her death.
Further probing into the couple’s relationship revealed underlying tensions. Dr. Mahendra was reportedly upset after his in-laws refused to assist him in setting up a hospital, a move that may have contributed to his frustration and subsequent actions.
Additionally, there were allegations of an extramarital affair, which further complicated the dynamics between the couple.
Dr. Mahendra has been arrested and is currently in police custody. His arrest has sent shockwaves through the medical community, highlighting the potential misuse of medical expertise for malicious purposes.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance and thorough investigation in cases of unexpected deaths, especially when medical professionals are involved.
