In a significant development that could impact upcoming film releases and the integrity of the certification process, the #BombayHighCourt has issued a formal notice to the #CentralBoardOfFilmCertification (CBFC). The notice comes in response to a writ petition filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, alleging an arbitrary and unreasonable delay by the CBFC in certifying the film “Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi”.
Film Inspired by Popular Political Biography
The film in question is inspired by the acclaimed book, The Monk Who Became Chief Minister, published in 2017. The narrative is believed to explore the transformative journey of a spiritual leader rising to a position of political prominence. Given the socio-political sensitivity and potential public interest, the delay in certification has attracted widespread attention.
Producers Accuse CBFC of Inaction and Non-Compliance
The producers of the film, in their writ petition, have accused the CBFC of #proceduralnoncompliance and #administrativeinaction. They allege that despite having submitted all the necessary documentation and applications well in advance, there has been no progress in the certification process.
According to the petition, multiple applications were filed with the CBFC beginning in early June 2025, covering not only the film itself but also its #trailer, #teaser, and #promotionalmusicvideo. Despite repeated submissions and follow-ups, the Board has allegedly failed to acknowledge, process, or respond with any clear timeline or explanation.
Violation of Cinematograph Act and New Rules Cited
The petition brings into focus the statutory obligations imposed upon the CBFC by the #CinematographAct1952 and the newly introduced #CinematographCertificationRules2024. These legal frameworks mandate that all certification applications must be processed within a defined timeframe, ensuring transparency and accountability in the film approval process.
However, the producers have alleged that the CBFC has failed to uphold these legal requirements, thereby causing delays that could severely impact the film’s release and promotional planning.
Scheduled Release Under Threat
The film, “Ajey: The Untold Story of a Yogi”, is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on August 1, 2025. The alleged delay in certification threatens to derail the entire release schedule, potentially causing financial losses and logistical complications for the production team. The producers argue that such delays not only affect the business side of filmmaking but also raise #freedomofexpression concerns in the larger creative landscape.
Court’s Response: CBFC to Reply Within Two Days
Taking cognizance of the matter, the Bombay High Court has now directed the CBFC to appear through its legal counsel and respond within two days. The court’s notice reflects a growing concern over delays and irregularities in the film certification process, especially in the wake of recent legislative efforts aimed at streamlining and digitizing the procedure.
A Crucial Legal and Cultural Moment
This case could set an important precedent regarding #accountabilityinpublicinstitutions and the #legalrecourse available to filmmakers when faced with unexplained procedural hurdles. With the film’s release date fast approaching, the spotlight is now firmly on the CBFC and its compliance with both statutory timelines and constitutional principles.
