In a symbolic step aimed at fostering patriotism, unity, and brotherhood, Chhattisgarh Waqf Board Chairman Salim Raj has issued an official circular directing all mosques, madrasas, and dargahs across the state to hoist the Indian national flag outside their main gates on August 15, the nation’s Independence Day.
The move, announced on Monday, is positioned as a gesture to showcase the shared commitment of Indian Muslims towards the country and to visibly mark the occasion of the nation’s 79th Independence Day.
According to Raj, the appeal has been met with widespread acceptance—over 70% of mosques, madrasas, and dargahs have already confirmed they will participate in the flag-hoisting. However, he acknowledged that some institutions have raised objections.
The Circular’s Message
The written directive stated: On the auspicious occasion of this national festival, the national flag should be hoisted at the main gate of all mosques/madrasas/dargahs situated in Chhattisgarh state. Understand the importance of Independence Day and maintain the dignity of this occasion by showing patriotism, mutual unity, and brotherhood.”
Raj, a BJP leader, clarified that the initiative was entirely his own and not a party mandate. Linking the idea to the ongoing Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, he said: What is the problem in hoisting the Indian flag outside religious places?
The patriotism of Muslims in India has sometimes been questioned, often due to misconceptions influenced by the identity of Pakistani Muslims. This is an opportunity to prove that Indian Muslims love their country and the Tricolour, and to clear any lingering doubts.”
Outreach and Reactions
For the past week, Raj has been actively engaging with Mutwallis (caretakers of mosques and shrines) to promote the idea. Many have embraced the call, with hundreds confirming their participation.
The 1857 uprising was a united fight for freedom when Hindus and Muslims stood together. The flag is not a symbol of religion—it is a symbol of freedom,” he said.
In a strong statement, Raj added: Flag hoisting is a mark of our respect and pride. Those who do not love the country and the Tricolour have no right to live on the land of Mother Bharat.”
While some dissent remains, the move has sparked discussions on the role of religious spaces in expressing national unity, with many observers calling it a bold and unifying gesture ahead of Independence Day celebrations.
