CM Yogi Adityanath Orders Overhaul of Government Schools Across Uttar Pradesh: “No More Dilapidated Schools”

In a decisive move to fix the crumbling foundation of Uttar Pradesh’s basic education system, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday issued stern directions for a statewide, intensive review of all government-run council schools.

Chairing a high-level meeting, the CM declared in no uncertain terms that not a single school in the state should function from a dilapidated or unsafe building and that every school must be equipped with essential infrastructure.

Yogi Adityanath emphasized that where deficiencies are found—whether it is collapsing structures, broken toilets, a lack of electricity, or poor furniture—repair work must begin immediately, without delay. He held district officials accountable and warned that negligence would not be tolerated.

To ensure systematic inspection, the CM ordered the formation of dedicated teams in each district under the leadership of the respective District Magistrate (DM) and Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA). These teams are to conduct physical verification of all schools, inspecting crucial infrastructure elements such as:

  • Structural integrity of the building
  • Availability of drinking water
  • Proper and functional toilets
  • Reliable electricity connections
  • Sufficient furniture and student seating
  • Proper wall painting
  • Ramps for differently-abled children

Wherever buildings are declared unfit for use, students must be relocated immediately to temporary, safe locations, and repairs or reconstruction must be initiated without delay.

The CM also called for a phased action plan leveraging both the departmental budget and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding. Furthermore, MPs, MLAs, and local public representatives are to be roped in as active participants in this campaign to revamp the education infrastructure.

While reviewing progress under the state’s ambitious “Operation Kayakalp”, Yogi did not shy away from criticizing past administrations.

He highlighted that before 2017, only 36% of government schools had basic infrastructure, and just 7,500 had functional libraries. Shockingly, only 33.9% of schools had toilets for girls, and digital tools like smart classes were virtually non-existent. Uniforms, shoes, socks, and books—necessities—were inconsistently provided.

However, under his administration’s watch in the past eight years, Uttar Pradesh has seen a massive transformation, he claimed. Today, 96% of infrastructural reforms under Operation Kayakalp have reportedly been completed. The state now boasts:

  • Libraries in 1,32,678 schools, each stocked with at least 500 books
  • 15.37 crore free textbooks distributed for the 2024–25 academic session
  • 4.53 lakh teachers trained in digital teaching methods

Still, the CM acknowledged the bitter reality that many government schools continue to suffer from poor attendance, absent teachers, and substandard learning conditions. This has forced thousands of rural families to enroll their children in mushrooming “convent” schools—English-medium in name only.

These so-called convent schools often offer no better education. Many teachers in these institutions cannot speak or write even a single grammatically correct sentence in English, exposing the hollow claims behind their “English Medium” branding. Poor villagers, desperate for quality education, are being exploited and misled.

This dual crisis—the deteriorating state of government schools and the unchecked growth of fake convents—continues to plague Uttar Pradesh’s education system. And while the CM’s efforts to bring reforms are undeniable, the ground reality remains harsh and deeply flawed.

Yogi concluded by demanding a detailed district-wise progress report, complete with photographic documentation, to be submitted at the earliest.

The big question remains: Will this ambitious push finally bridge the gap between policy and performance, or will it become yet another file gathering dust in government offices?
