In a shocking incident in Bhopal, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable allegedly shot his wife dead before taking his own life in the early hours of Thursday, police said.
The tragic event occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. when 35-year-old Ravikant Verma, stationed at the CRPF Bangrasia Camp near Bhopal, allegedly shot his wife, Renu Verma, 32, with his service rifle. After the act, Ravikant reportedly contacted the CRPF control room, local police, and his landlord before turning the weapon on himself, said M.R. Bhadouria, the station house officer (SHO) of Misrod police station.
Upon receiving the distress calls, police officials immediately rushed to the scene at the Capital Green Colony in the Misrod area. The couple’s bodies were subsequently sent for postmortem examination. Initial findings from the investigation indicate that the tragic incident was likely triggered by ongoing family discord. However, no suicide note was discovered at the scene, SHO Bhadouria added.
Ravikant Verma hailed from Bhind district in Madhya Pradesh and had been residing with his wife and two young children near the CRPF camp in Bangrasia, Misrod. The couple’s children—a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl—were asleep in another room when the incident occurred.
According to police, Ravikant had been assigned Quarter Guard duty on Wednesday night and returned home at approximately 10 p.m. with his service rifle. A few hours later, around 1:30 a.m., Ravikant allegedly shot his wife while their children remained unaware of the incident in the adjoining room. He then informed the CRPF control room, the local police, and his landlord about what had happened before using the same rifle to end his own life.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to uncover the exact sequence of events and the reasons behind this extreme step. While family discord has been cited as a possible motive, officials are exploring all angles to determine if there were other contributing factors.
