Death Toll in Gaza Surpasses 58,000 as Conflict Enters 21st Month: Health Ministry

The Gaza Health Ministry has reported that over 58,000 Palestinians have been killed in the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023.

This staggering figure was released in a statement on Sunday, and while the ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants, it emphasized that more than half of the victims are women and children.

Despite international efforts, there appears to be no significant progress in negotiations between Israel and Hamas aimed at securing a ceasefire to end the 21-month-long war. The humanitarian toll continues to rise as deadly airstrikes and ground operations persist across the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, two funerals were held for Palestinians who were reportedly killed by Israeli settlers. Among them was Sayfollah “Saif” Musallet, a 20-year-old Palestinian-American who had traveled from Florida. He was killed along with his 23-year-old friend Razek Hussein al-Shalabi in what Palestinian authorities described as a settler attack.

Hospitals in central Gaza, including Al-Awda Hospital, reported that at least 19 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Sunday, among them six children who died while collecting water at a public collection point in Nuseirat. According to witness Ramadan Nassar, about 20 children and 14 adults were queuing for water when the missile struck, creating chaos and casualties among those trying to flee.

The Israeli military admitted that the intended target was a suspected militant, but due to a technical error, the munition missed its mark and struck “dozens of meters” from the target. They said the incident was under review.

In another strike on a home in Zawaida, nine Palestinians were killed, including two women and three children, according to officials at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. The Israeli military did not issue an immediate comment on that incident, but reiterated its position that Hamas bears responsibility for civilian deaths because it operates within densely populated areas.

In the West Bank, mourners gathered in the streets of Al-Mazraa a-Sharqiya, carrying the bodies of Musallet and al-Shalabi while waving Palestinian flags and chanting “God is great.” Musallet, a native of Tampa, Florida, was described by his family as a “kind, hardworking, and deeply-respected young man” who was building a life and business in the U.S. but remained closely tied to his Palestinian heritage.

His family has called on the U.S. State Department to launch a full investigation into his death and to hold the Israeli settlers accountable. While the State Department acknowledged awareness of the reports, it declined to comment further, citing respect for the family’s grief.

According to Israeli authorities, the violence in the area began after Palestinians allegedly hurled rocks at settlers on Friday, which reportedly resulted in minor injuries to two people and escalated tensions that led to further violence.
