Prayagraj — A wave of shock spread through the administrative and local community after Sudhir Kumar, a 56-year-old Deputy Director in the Uttar Pradesh Information Department, was found dead late Tuesday night under mysterious circumstances.
His body was recovered from a drain near the former Chief Justice of India’s residence in the George Town area, prompting an intensive police investigation.
Sudhir Kumar, originally from Jagram Chauraha in Katra, was living with his family in Durga Nagar Colony, Mahewa, Naini.
He is survived by his wife, Ambalika; daughter, Aditi; and son, Vaibhav. Although officially posted at the Lucknow headquarters, he was currently attached to the Fatehpur office as Deputy Director.
Disappearance and Discovery
On Tuesday afternoon, around 1 p.m., Sudhir left his house, saying he was heading to the market and walked out carrying a sling bag.
When he did not return by evening and his phone remained switched off, his worried family began searching for him.
Around 1:30 a.m., a security guard near the former CJI’s residence noticed a body lying in a drain and alerted the police.
Officers from George Town police station arrived at the scene and recovered the body.
When they recharged his mobile phone, a call came in at about 4 a.m., allowing police to reach his wife and inform her of the tragic news. The family later identified the body at the post-mortem house.
What the Initial Investigation Reveals
The preliminary post-mortem report indicates that Sudhir may have died due to drowning, but the circumstances surrounding how and why he ended up in the drain remain unclear.
Police emphasise that while drowning is the current medical observation, foul play has not been ruled out.
Items recovered from the scene — including empty beer cans, a plastic cup, a snack packet, and a bag containing a piece of cloth and a ₹100 note — have deepened the mystery.
These objects, along with the unusual location of the body, have raised several unanswered questions.
Key Questions Police Are Investigating
- How did Sudhir reach the George Town area?
- Was he alone, or was someone accompanying him?
- What events unfolded between the time he left home and the discovery of his body?
- Do the items found at the scene indicate personal consumption or the presence of others?
To piece together the timeline, police are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby streets and have collected forensic samples from the area.
Investigators are also mapping possible routes he could have taken and analysing call records to determine his last known contacts.
Growing Concern
Given his senior official position, the death has drawn considerable attention from both the administration and the public.
As the investigation progresses, authorities stress that they are exploring all angles and awaiting detailed forensic reports before reaching any conclusion.
The case remains open and under active investigation.
