High Quality Affordable Medicines For All Citizens’ Modi On Jan Aushadhi Diwas

On the occasion of Jan Aushadhi Diwas, observed annually on March 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every citizen has access to high-quality and affordable medicines. This initiative aligns with the vision of creating a healthier and fitter India, where no individual is deprived of essential healthcare due to financial constraints.

PM Modi’s Message on Jan Aushadhi Diwas

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “#JanAushadhiDiwas reflects our commitment to provide top-quality and affordable medicines to people, ensuring a healthy and fit India.”

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was launched to promote the use of generic medicines, which offer the same efficacy as branded medicines but at significantly lower costs. The initiative is aimed at reducing the burden of healthcare expenses on the common man, making medicines more accessible to all.

Health Minister JP Nadda Highlights the Achievements of PMBJP

Union Health Minister JP Nadda echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, shedding light on the remarkable progress made under the PMBJP scheme. He revealed that there are currently over 15,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras operating across the country, serving more than 10 lakh people daily. The cost-effectiveness of these medicines has resulted in savings of approximately ₹30,000 crore for the citizens of India.

Nadda emphasized that PMBJP has transformed India’s healthcare system by ensuring the availability of quality medicines at affordable prices. He highlighted the initiative’s key mantra: “Achi Bhi, Sasti Bhi” (Good as well as Affordable).

Comprehensive Healthcare Coverage and Expansion Plans

The Minister further elaborated on the extensive portfolio of medicines available under the scheme. The Jan Aushadhi Kendras stock an impressive range of 2,047 medicines and 300 surgical items, catering to diverse therapeutic needs. Unlike other free medicine distribution programs, PMBJP operates on a sustainable model, maintaining strict quality checks, competitive procurement strategies, and an efficient supply chain managed by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI).

Recognizing the importance of entrepreneurship and inclusivity, the government has introduced special incentives to encourage businesses from marginalized communities. Women entrepreneurs, SC/ST communities, and businesses in remote areas receive additional support to set up and manage Jan Aushadhi Kendras, ensuring widespread accessibility to affordable medicines.

Looking ahead, the government has ambitious expansion plans for the Jan Aushadhi network. Health Minister JP Nadda announced that the number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras is set to increase to 25,000 by 2027. As part of this expansion strategy, the government plans to open 5,000 new centers in 2025 alone, further enhancing accessibility to low-cost medicines in urban and rural areas alike.

Global Reach: India’s First Overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra in Mauritius

In a landmark achievement, the PMBJP program has also extended its reach beyond India’s borders. Minister Nadda highlighted that the first overseas Jan Aushadhi Kendra was inaugurated in Mauritius, marking a significant step in taking India’s affordable healthcare initiative to a global platform. This move aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming a key player in providing affordable healthcare solutions worldwide.

“Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, we have set a goal of opening 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras by 2027. This year, we will be opening 5,000 more Jan Aushadhi Kendras. I urge everyone to visit these centres and take advantage of affordable medicines. If you are already benefitting from Jan Aushadhi medicines, share your experience with others,” Nadda urged.

The Jan Aushadhi Diwas, observed every year on March 7, serves as an important awareness campaign promoting the use of generic medicines and highlighting the benefits of the PMBJP scheme. As part of the celebrations, a week-long series of events is organized across the country from March 1 to March 7 to educate people about the advantages of affordable healthcare.

Launched in November 2008 by the Department of Pharmaceuticals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) has significantly contributed to making healthcare accessible and affordable for millions of Indians. Through its dedicated Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs), the scheme ensures that people across the nation have access to essential medicines without financial burden.

With its focus on affordability, accessibility, and quality, the PMBJP initiative continues to be a game-changer in India’s healthcare sector, reaffirming the government’s commitment to building a healthier and stronger India.
