He recalled how the police didn’t disturb him because he would wait until the last train left the station before settling down to sleep. “One of the policemen was particularly kind,” he shared.
“Many years later, I met his son, and he reminded me of his father’s kindness. It was a touching moment. It reminded me that, even in our darkest times, humanity and compassion can light the way.”
The Struggles That Forged a Star
These were not merely days of physical discomfort, but emotionally and psychologically draining times. Despite the crushing weight of rejection and uncertainty, Kher refused to give up.
He would travel across the city, knocking on the doors of producers, directors, and writers — often receiving nothing more than a polite refusal. But what stood out during those years, he recalls, was the respect and warmth with which even struggling artists were received.
“Filmmakers back then were willing to sit and talk, even if they had no roles to offer,” he said. “There was a spirit of encouragement, and it helped me keep going.”
Anupam Kher’s breakthrough came with Mahesh Bhatt’s critically acclaimed film Saaransh (1984), a film that would go on to define his career. At just 29 years old, Kher portrayed the role of a 65-year-old grieving father with such emotional depth and authenticity that audiences and critics alike were stunned.
That performance earned him nationwide recognition and proved that he was a rare talent capable of taking on complex roles far beyond his years. It was not just a debut; it was a statement — that Anupam Kher had arrived, and he was here to stay.
