INDIA–BRAZIL TIES REACH NEW HEIGHTS AMID GLOBAL TURBULENCE

PM Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke over the phone on August 7 (Thursday), reaffirming their unwavering commitment to strengthen the India–Brazil Strategic Partnership in the face of evolving global challenges.

A Conversation Steeped in Warmth and Purpose

PM Modi warmly recalled his recent visit to Brazil, thanking President Lula for the exceptional hospitality that made his trip not only memorable but deeply meaningful. The leaders built on the momentum of that visit, setting their sights on expanding cooperation across multiple critical sectors.

Strategic Sectors in Focus

The dialogue covered a wide spectrum of areas vital to both nations’ futures:

  • Trade & Technology – driving innovation and boosting bilateral commerce
  • Energy & Defence – securing resources and enhancing strategic security
  • Agriculture & Health – ensuring food security and robust healthcare systems
  • People-to-People Ties – strengthening cultural and educational exchanges

Both leaders emphasised that Global South nations must unite for mutual benefit, underscoring that cooperation rooted in people-centric policies creates prosperity for all.

Beyond Borders: Regional & Global Dialogue

PM Modi and President Lula also exchanged views on pressing regional and global issues, signalling a shared vision to address international challenges through partnership, not confrontation.

Their discussion reflected a mature diplomatic alignment, as they agreed on a framework to elevate their strategic partnership to unprecedented heights.

Amid Rising Tariffs from the US

This conversation came at a sensitive moment, just days after US President Donald Trump slapped 50% tariffs on Indian goods, citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
Brazil faces similar tariff pressures from Washington.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs denounced the US move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable”, making it clear that New Delhi will safeguard its national interests at all costs.

President Lula, while stating he would not reach out directly to President Trump over the tariffs, revealed plans to invite him to the upcoming COP climate summit. He also expressed his intention to coordinate with PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, signalling a strategic alliance of major economies in navigating turbulent trade waters.

The Road Ahead

The call ended with a mutual commitment to stay in close contact, ensuring that the momentum in India–Brazil cooperation will only grow stronger in the months ahead.

Both leaders envision a future where their nations work side-by-side in shaping a fairer, more inclusive, and sustainable world order.

From shared values to shared victories — the India–Brazil partnership is ready to shine brighter on the world stage.
