India Engaged with Australia Amid Anti-Immigrant Protests Affecting Indian Community

India on Friday stated that it is closely engaged with Australian authorities following a series of anti-immigrant protests that targeted immigrants, particularly members of the Indian diaspora, across major Australian cities over the past weekend.

The protests, which drew attention nationwide, raised concerns about the safety and well-being of Indians living in Australia—many of whom have resided there for decades, contributing significantly to the local economy, academia, and society.

The demonstrations also affected students who travel abroad seeking education and new opportunities, adding stress and uncertainty to their daily lives.

Government Engagement

Speaking at his weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian missions in Australia have been actively coordinating with both the Australian government and the Indian diaspora in the country.

The government is committed to the welfare and well-being of all Indians abroad and remains closely engaged with the government of Australia and our diaspora there,” he said.

India’s diplomatic efforts come in recognition of the Indian community in Australia, which numbers over one million people, including professionals, long-term residents, and students pursuing higher education.

Before the protests unfolded, the Indian High Commission in Australia had formally raised its concerns with the Australian government, emphasizing the potential risks and disruption to residents. Jaiswal noted:

In a formal response to our High Commission, the government of Australia acknowledged that the protests may be concerning for Australia’s diverse communities.”

Acknowledgment and Support

Senior political leaders from both the ruling government and opposition parties in Australia issued statements supporting multiculturalism and denouncing discrimination, highlighting the valuable contributions of the Indian diaspora in the country.

The contribution of the Indian diaspora in Australia was also acknowledged and appreciated,” Jaiswal added.

Concerns for Students and Long-Term Residents

For Indian students who move abroad with aspirations of academic growth and career opportunities, such unrest creates emotional stress, safety concerns, and disruptions in daily life.

For professionals and families settled in Australia for decades, these protests threaten the sense of security and integration they have built over the years.

The Indian government has reassured that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with local authorities to ensure that Indians residing or studying in Australia can live and work without fear. India continues to firmly believe that diversity is a strength.

We value our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Australia, which is further bolstered by strong people-to-people ties,” Jaiswal emphasized.

Measures by Indian Missions in Australia

The Indian High Commission and Consulates have proactively implemented several measures to assist and safeguard the diaspora, including:

  1. Emergency Helplines: Dedicated phone and WhatsApp numbers for Indians facing harassment or safety threats.
  2. Regular Coordination with Local Authorities: Ensuring rapid response by Australian police to any incidents targeting the Indian community.
  3. Safety Advisories: Issuing timely updates and precautions for students, professionals, and families living in affected cities.
  4. Community Engagement: Working with Indian associations and student groups to provide guidance, reassurance, and reporting mechanisms.
  5. Legal and Consular Support: Assisting individuals who face harassment, including filing complaints and providing access to legal counsel.

These measures aim to ensure that Indian residents and students can continue their lives safely, pursue education and work, and feel secure within the multicultural fabric of Australia.

The situation underscores the importance of maintaining inclusive and safe environments for diaspora communities, ensuring that immigrants, long-term residents, and international students can contribute meaningfully without facing discrimination or hostility.
