India on Friday stated that it is closely engaged with Australian authorities following a series of anti-immigrant protests that targeted immigrants, particularly members of the Indian diaspora, across major Australian cities over the past weekend.
The protests, which drew attention nationwide, raised concerns about the safety and well-being of Indians living in Australia—many of whom have resided there for decades, contributing significantly to the local economy, academia, and society.
The demonstrations also affected students who travel abroad seeking education and new opportunities, adding stress and uncertainty to their daily lives.
Government Engagement
Speaking at his weekly media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian missions in Australia have been actively coordinating with both the Australian government and the Indian diaspora in the country.
The government is committed to the welfare and well-being of all Indians abroad and remains closely engaged with the government of Australia and our diaspora there,” he said.
India’s diplomatic efforts come in recognition of the Indian community in Australia, which numbers over one million people, including professionals, long-term residents, and students pursuing higher education.
Before the protests unfolded, the Indian High Commission in Australia had formally raised its concerns with the Australian government, emphasizing the potential risks and disruption to residents. Jaiswal noted:
In a formal response to our High Commission, the government of Australia acknowledged that the protests may be concerning for Australia’s diverse communities.”

Senior political leaders from both the ruling government and opposition parties in Australia issued statements supporting multiculturalism and denouncing discrimination, highlighting the valuable contributions of the Indian diaspora in the country.
