India to Host 2029 World Police and Fire Games in Ahmedabad: A Landmark Moment for National Pride and Global Recognition

In a historic first, India has won the bid to host the prestigious 2029 World Police and Fire Games, marking a monumental achievement that underscores the country’s rising global stature in both sports and international cooperation.

Ahmedabad, one of India’s fastest-growing cities and a hub of modern sports infrastructure, has been selected as the venue for this global event — a decision hailed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah as a moment of immense national pride.

The World Police and Fire Games (WPFG), held biennially since 1985, bring together thousands of athletes from police, fire, emergency medical services, disaster response, and other first responder communities across the globe. The games serve not only as a competitive sporting platform but also as a symbol of global solidarity, discipline, and service.

India’s association with the WPFG began in 2007, when a contingent of Indian police personnel first participated in the games held in Adelaide, Australia.

Since then, Indian athletes have consistently demonstrated excellence on the international stage, having secured over 1,400 medals across eight editions.

The most recent games, held in Winnipeg, Canada (July 26–August 6, 2023), saw Indian police sportspersons delivering a record-breaking performance with 343 medals, including 224 golds, 82 silvers, and 37 bronzes.

The selection process for India’s contingent is rigorous. Athletes are chosen based on their performance in the All India Police Games, which are organized annually by the All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB).

This governing body, comprising 53 member organizations from various Central Armed Police Forces, state police forces, and security agencies, conducts around 40 national-level competitions every year. Gold medalists from these games are shortlisted to represent India at the international level.

In his message shared on the social media platform ‘X’, Home Minister Amit Shah expressed immense satisfaction over India’s successful bid to host the 2029 edition. He said,

“It is a moment of great pride for every citizen, as Bharat has been designated as the host country for the prestigious 2029 World Police and Fire Games.

Bharat winning the prestigious bid to host the event is a global recognition of our sprawling sports infrastructure built under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi Ji.”

Shah also noted that Ahmedabad’s selection as the host city reflects its growing profile as a modern sporting destination, capable of handling events of such global magnitude.

Hosting more than 50 sports disciplines, the event will bring together professionals who serve on the front lines of public safety, enabling them to engage in healthy competition, promote physical fitness, and build international camaraderie.

Why This Matters: Beyond Medals and Matches

The decision to host the 2029 WPFG is far more than a sporting milestone. It is a recognition of India’s commitment to supporting its uniformed forces, enhancing global collaboration in areas of public safety, and showcasing world-class infrastructure capable of delivering a seamless global event.

Furthermore, it offers an opportunity to celebrate the courage, resilience, and dedication of police, fire, and emergency personnel — those who serve not just in India but around the world.

As India prepares to welcome thousands of international participants and delegates, the 2029 World Police and Fire Games promise to be an unforgettable event — one that reinforces India’s image as a rising power in sports diplomacy, civic service appreciation, and global event management.
