Indira Marathon On Nov 19, Age lowered To 18 Due To Dwindling Participation: Prize Money Below Expectations

PRAYAGRAJ: The prestigious Indira Marathon, one of the oldest and most celebrated long-distance running events in India, is set to mark its 40th edition in Prayagraj on November 19 this year.

In a significant move, organizers are pushing to allow runners as young as 18 years old to participate, a shift from the traditional minimum age limit of 21 years.

The proposal comes in response to a troubling trend — the steady decline in participation numbers over the past few years.

Once a marathon that attracted thousands from across India and abroad, the event has recently been struggling to draw even 500 participants across both categories combined.

To address this, the Uttar Pradesh Athletics Association (UPAA) has recommended lowering the age threshold, and the proposal has now been forwarded to the All India Athletic Federation (AIAF) for approval.

A Marathon with a Rich Legacy

The Indira Marathon was inaugurated in 1975 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, with the vision of promoting health, endurance, and the spirit of sportsmanship.

Since then, it has grown into a symbol of long-distance running in North India and has consistently attracted elite athletes, amateur runners, and fitness enthusiasts alike. Over the decades, it has also served as a qualifying platform for athletes aspiring to make a mark at national and international levels.

Why Participation is Declining

Organizers and coaches highlight several reasons behind the dwindling numbers. The rise of shorter, more accessible runs such as 10K races, half-marathons, and city-based fun runs have diverted younger participants who find marathons physically daunting.

The demanding training schedules, lack of sponsorships, and limited financial incentives have also discouraged many budding athletes.

In addition, health concerns and the rigorous nature of a full marathon have made it less appealing to casual runners.

The Push for Youth Participation

During the North Zone Junior Athletics Championship held in Prayagraj from September 23 to 25, the issue of lowering the eligibility age for marathon runners was formally raised.

Advocates argue that younger runners, especially those already competing in junior athletics events, should be given an opportunity to test themselves in long-distance formats.

Coach Devi Prasad of Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium stated that introducing 18-year-olds would inject fresh energy into the event:Lowering the age will certainly boost the number of participants.

Young runners are more enthusiastic and eager to prove themselves, and this change could revive the marathon’s legacy.”

Narendra Kumar, Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Athletics Association, also confirmed that the final decision rests with the federation, but the proposal is gaining momentum. Organizers are hopeful that the federation’s nod will breathe new life into the event.

Looking Ahead

If approved, this will mark a turning point in the Indira Marathon’s history, making it more inclusive for the younger generation. Sports officials believe that the participation of 18-year-olds could significantly enhance the competitive atmosphere while preserving the marathon’s original spirit of endurance and national unity.

With its 40th edition around the corner, Prayagraj awaits to see whether this change will indeed re-energize one of India’s landmark marathons and restore it to its former glory.
