Junior Doctors Protest at SRN Hospital After Assault on Colleague in Prayagraj

Prayagraj, Correspondent: Tension gripped the Motilal Nehru Medical College and SRN Hospital on Tuesday night after junior doctors went on strike to protest against the assault of their colleague, Dr. Anurag, a junior in the Department of Surgery.

The doctors staged a sit-in protest outside the Trauma Centre, bringing all work to a halt. Raising slogans against the police administration, the agitated doctors expressed their anger over what they described as negligence and insensitivity on the part of law enforcement authorities.

Chaos in Emergency Services

With junior doctors suspending their duties, the Trauma Centre and the Medicine Emergency Department were thrown into disarray. Patients and their attendants faced great inconvenience, as the strike disrupted critical medical services.

The protesting doctors alleged that even 24 hours after a written complaint was submitted, no action had been taken against the culprits involved in the assault. They further accused the police of misbehaving with the doctors instead of providing them protection and support.

Details of the Assault

Dr. Anurag, who hails originally from Faridabad, currently resides in a flat near the LIC Colony in Tagore Town, Prayagraj. On Monday evening, while he was at home, he received a phone call luring him downstairs under the pretext of collecting a delivery parcel.

When he stepped out, a group of eight to ten unidentified youths attacked him brutally. According to reports, the assailants had called him from a traceable number that later turned out to belong to a youth from Kaushambi district.

Dr. Anurag lodged a written complaint at the police station immediately after the incident. However, no formal First Information Report (FIR) was registered until Tuesday night, leading to the doctors’ collective outrage and protest.

Police Response

Station House Officer (SHO) of George Town, Santosh Singh, stated that a case has now been registered regarding the assault. Despite this assurance, the delay in action fueled dissatisfaction among the medical fraternity.

Doctors Voice Concerns

Many doctors expressed frustration over the situation, stating that such incidents put their safety in jeopardy. Dr. Sonu Singh remarked, “If doctors themselves are not safe, how can we carry out our duties without fear?” He also criticized the police for their lack of supportive behavior toward medical professionals.

Institutional Stand

According to Dr. Santosh Singh, Media In-charge of Motilal Nehru Medical College, the doctors had patiently waited for 24 hours after submitting the complaint, hoping for action from the police. However, when the FIR was not filed promptly, they were compelled to demonstrate to draw attention to their grievances.

Meanwhile, patients arriving at the Trauma Centre and their relatives were left distressed and anxious as they witnessed the ongoing protests and the suspension of crucial emergency medical services.
