Key Member of ‘Digital Arrest’ Cyber Fraud Syndicate Arrested in Prayagraj; Linked to ₹50 Lakh Scam

Prayagraj: In a breakthrough against cybercrime, the Cyber Crime Police on Thursday arrested a key operative of a notorious gang involved in “digital arrest” fraud schemes.

The accused, Dhruv Shukla from Kanpur, was detained and sent to jail for providing bank accounts used for large-scale online fraud transactions.

He is allegedly involved in a recent case in which a trader from Muthiganj was conned out of ₹50 lakh.

According to police, investigators traced the bank account through which the fraudulent amount was transferred, leading them directly to Dhruv Shukla. He was apprehended during a raid and later confessed to his role during interrogation.

The case involves businessman Rakesh Chandra Jaiswal, who complained to the Cyber Police Station on November 23, reporting that cybercriminals impersonating CBI officers had extorted ₹50 lakh from him by placing him under a fake “digital arrest.”

The fraudsters claimed that ₹9.38 crore had been transferred into an account linked to his Aadhaar, falsely alleging that the matter was under trial in the Supreme Court and threatening action under money-laundering laws.

A team led by Cyber Police Station in-charge Om Narayan Gautam conducted a detailed investigation, uncovering Dhruv Shukla’s involvement.

He revealed that he had connected with the gang through social media and supplied them with bank accounts for illegal fund transfers.

Once money was deposited into these accounts, he withdrew the funds via cheques and ATMs before handing them over to the gang, earning a commission in return.

In the Muthiganj case, ₹10 lakh was transferred into Dhruv’s bank account as part of the scam, which he withdrew and passed on to the fraud group.

Police are now expanding the investigation to identify additional members of the syndicate and its network.
