Kohli Agrees to Play Vijay Hazare Trophy, but Kaif Warns Against Forcing Icons into Domestic Cricket

In a development, Virat Kohli has confirmed his availability for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, informing the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) that he is ready to join the state squad later this month.

The confirmation comes shortly after reports that Kohli was initially unenthusiastic about returning to domestic cricket for match time despite the BCCI’s directive urging senior players, including Rohit Sharma, to participate in the tournament to maintain national selection eligibility.

The decision has reignited debate in cricketing circles on whether legends of the sport should be expected to play domestic competitions.

Former India batter Mohammed Kaif, reacting to Kohli’s confirmation, strongly asserted that a player of Kohli’s calibre should never be compelled or pressured to prove readiness through domestic cricket.

Kaif: Kohli’s Class Requires No Justification

Referring to Kohli’s breathtaking match-winning hundred in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi—his 52nd ODI century—Kaif argued that the innings alone demonstrated that match rhythm and sharpness are not concerns for a player of his stature.

Kaif commented: Kohli returned to international cricket after 35 days and looked unstoppable.

He dominated bowlers, hit multiple sixes, and showed why he is the king of this format. If he can perform like this after a break, how can anyone force him into domestic cricket just for practice?”

He stressed that elite athletes deserve discretion in their preparation: You can request someone like Kohli, but you cannot impose.

He should play if he feels the need, not because anyone demands it. Special players must be treated differently.”

Handling Senior Cricketers with Care

Kaif also highlighted that head coach Gautam Gambhir anthe d Indian team management need to offer flexibility and respect to experienced champions: Great coaches understand the mindset of great players.

Behind closed doors, they coordinate with them and provide whatever they need to stay at peak performance.

Pressure tactics don’t work with icons who carry decades of experience.”

With Kohli now set to join the Delhi squad, attention will turn to how this participation will shape team planning ahead of major international commitments, and whether the debate prompts a rethink on the role of the domestic circuit for India’s biggest stars.
