Krishna Janmbhumi-Eidgah dispute hearing adjourned till Sept 23

In Krishna Janmbhumi-Shahi Eidgah dispute at Mathura, the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing of the case till September 23, 2024.

Justice Mayank Kumar Jain passed this order after hearing both sides.

Earlier, on August 1, 2024, the high court rejected applications of the Muslim side challenging the maintainability of suits of Hindu worshippers and held that all suits of Hindu worshippers are maintainable.  In the August 1 order, the court had also held that these suits are not barred by the Limitation Act, Waqf Act, and Places of Worship Act,1991, which prohibits conversion of any religious structure as existed on August 15, 1947.

With this judgment, the high court had paved the way for all 18 consolidated Suits to be heard on their merits.

The Hindu side has filed all these suits for possession after removal of the structure of the Shahi idgah masjid as well as for restoration of the temple and a permanent injunction.

The controversy is related to Mughal emperor Aurangazeb-era Shahi Eidgah mosque at Mathura, which is alleged to have been built after demolishing a temple at the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Raising preliminary objection on the maintainability. However, the Muslim side (Management Committee of Shahi-Eidgah and UP Sunni Central Waqf Board) is opposed to this suit on several grounds.
