Maharashtra cabinet passes resolution to urge Centre to confer ‘Bharat Ratna’ on Ratan Tata

Mumbai. Maharashtra cabinet on Thursday passed a resolution urging the central government to confer ‘Bharat Ratna’, the country’s highest civilian award, on legendary industrialist late Ratan Tata.

The cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid homage to the industry icon, who died in a Mumbai hospital on Wednesday night.

A motion of condolence was passed during the meeting, a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said.

Losing a dear friend like Ratan is painful. He was a role model for me in value-based leadership.

The cabinet also passed a resolution urging the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna on the late industrialist.

Tata has been feted with the country’s second highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan.

The resolution said entrepreneurship is an effective way for the growth of the society. The country can be taken on the path of progress and development by setting up new businesses, it said.

“It also requires love for the country and honest feelings for society upliftment. We have lost a visionary leader who was committed to the country and society. Tata’s role in the industrial sector and upliftment of the society was unparalleled. He tackled all challenges by adhering to high morals, transparent and clean business administration with discipline,” it said.

He carved a niche for the Tata Group and the country on the global stage, the resolution said.

It said Ratan Tata will always be remembered for his firm determination after the 26/11 terror attacks and contribution of Rs 1,500 crore to the PM Relief fund for the fight against COVID-19. He had opened all hotels of the Tata Group for COVID-19 patients.

The Taj Mahal Hotel, run by a Tata Group company, was among the places in Mumbai targeted by terrorists on November 26, 2008.

“The cabinet pays homage to Tata on behalf of the people of Maharashtra. We are with the Tata Group in this moment of grief,” the resolution added.

Ratan Tata family tree: From Jamsetji Tata to Maya Tata, know all the members here.

New Delhi. Ratan Naval Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai Wednesday night. He was admitted following age-related health issues and was undergoing treatment at the hospital. Tata, a beacon of India Inc., steered his group amid India’s economic liberalization and, subsequently, guided its global expansion.

Conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, Tata was considered one of the greatest philanthropists in the country who touched the lives of millions through his work in the field of healthcare, education, drinking water and many other areas.

Here’s a look at the family tree of the Tatas

Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group was born to Nusserwanji Ratan Tata and Jeevanbai Kavasji Tata, in 1939. Nusserwanji had four other children — Ratanbai, Maneckbai, Virbaiji, Jerbai.

Born into a family of Parsi priests, Jamsetji started his trading firm in 1868, when he was just 29 years old.  He started with a textile mill in central India in the 1870s. His vision later set the foundation for technical education in India and helped the nation to be counted among the industrialised nations.

Jamsetji married Hirabai Daboo and had three children — Sir Dorabji Tata, Dhunbai Tata, and Sir Ratan Tata.

Dorabji, the elder son of Jamsetji, was instrumental in translating his father’s vision into reality. It was under his leadership that the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust was created, propelling the Tata tradition of philanthropy. Jamsetji’s younger son, Ratan, was a philanthropist who created a trust to fund educational development, alleviate human suffering, and do other public utility works.

Sir Ratan Tata married Navjbai Sett and adopted Naval H Tata. Naval married Sonoo Commissariat and had two sons — Ratan N Tata and Jimmy N Tata. But Naval and Soonoo divorced when Ratan N Tata was only 10 years old. Naval later married Simone Dunoyer and with her, had a son, Noel Tata. Noel is Ratan and Jimmy’s half-brother.

While Ratan and Jimmy never married, Noel tied the knot with Aloo Mistry, sister of the late Cyrus Mistry, who served as Chairman of Tata Group. Noel and Aloo have three children — Leah Tata, Maya Tata, and Neville Tata.

Neville is married to Manasi Kirloskar and together they have two children – Jamset Tata and Tiana Tata.

Again, Jeevanbai Kavasji Tata’s adopted brother Dadabhai Kavasji Tata had a son with his wife Bhikhibai. Dadabhai’s son Ratanji Dadabhai Tata married a French woman Suzanne Briere. They had five children — Syla Petit, Jehangir Ratanji Dababhai Tata, Rodabeh Tata, Darab Tata, and Jimmy Tata.

Jehangir or JRD Tata, who went on to become Tata Chairman, pioneered civil aviation on the subcontinent in 1932 by launching the airline which is now known as Air India.
