Maharashtra Minister Pratap Sarnaik Becomes First Indian Owner of Tesla Model Y; Sparks Debate on EV Future in India

Tesla’s highly anticipated entry into the Indian market has now taken a significant step, as Maharashtra Transport Minister and Shiv Sena leader Pratap Sarnaik became the first Indian customer to purchase the brand’s Model Y SUV from its newly launched showroom at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

The development comes amid growing interest in electric mobility in India, and industry watchers say Tesla’s arrival could be a game-changer if backed by strong infrastructure and government policy.

The Model Y, priced at around ₹62 lakh, was handed over to Sarnaik on Friday. The minister had earlier promised to be the first to buy a Tesla vehicle when the showroom opened in July, a commitment he has now fulfilled.

Sarnaik’s Statement on the EV Revolution

Speaking at the delivery ceremony, Sarnaik said: As the transport minister of Maharashtra, I feel fortunate and happy to have received the first Y model Tesla car in India, which is environment-friendly. As a representative of the state government, it has always been our mission to put as many EV cars on the road as possible.

We have given toll concessions to EV cars and extended as many facilities as possible. It will bring a revolution in the state.”

He also clarified that he had paid the full amount without any discounts and would be gifting the car to his grandson, adding a personal touch to the event.

Political Reactions and Criticism

While the purchase marked a milestone for Tesla in India, it also sparked political debate. The Congress party criticised Sarnaik for choosing an imported car at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is emphasising “Make in India” and pushing for domestic EV production.

Tesla’s Growing Presence in Maharashtra

Tesla’s Mumbai showroom was inaugurated in July this year by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, underscoring the state government’s support for EV adoption.

Just a day later, Tesla’s Model Y was brought to the Maharashtra Assembly campus, where Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde test-drove the vehicle. Sarnaik had then declared his intent to be the first buyer — a promise he has now kept.

Analysts note that Tesla’s premium pricing may limit its reach in India initially, but its global reputation for performance, innovation, and sustainability could accelerate EV acceptance if supported by charging infrastructure, local assembly, and government incentives.

Sarnaik’s Recent Controversies

This is not the first time Sarnaik has made headlines. Recently, he staged a sting operation on bike taxi aggregator Rapido, personally booking a ride under a fake name to verify citizen complaints. Following his inspection, the transport department confiscated 78 unauthorized bike taxis in Mumbai.

However, the crackdown drew criticism after it was revealed that Rapido was the main sponsor of his son’s Dahi Handi event, raising questions over a conflict of interest.

Tesla’s Indian Challenge

While the Model Y’s first delivery has generated excitement, the real test for Tesla lies in scaling up operations in a price-sensitive and infrastructure-deficient market like India. Success will depend on whether Tesla can localize production, reduce costs, and compete with both international and Indian EV manufacturers already expanding in the market.
