Massive Teacher Recruitment Scam Exposed in Mau: 72 Booked, Including Top Welfare & Education Officials

Mau, Uttar Pradesh — In yet another grim reminder of how corruption has seeped deep into the very institutions meant to serve the public, police have registered a criminal case against 72 individuals, including three former District Social Welfare Officers and four officials from the Education Department, over a sweeping recruitment scam in Ambedkar Schools.

The scandal revolves around the appointment of 42 assistant teachers in 19 Ambedkar Schools of Mau district — schools that operate with financial aid from the Social Welfare Department and are intended to uplift underprivileged communities. Instead, they have been turned into a playground for fraud, forgery, and nepotism.

According to investigators, the list of accused reads like a damning ledger of collusion:

  • 42 assistant teachers who allegedly bagged their jobs using forged academic and professional certificates.
  • School managers who facilitated these dubious appointments.
  • Three ex-District Social Welfare Officers who allegedly greased the wheels of the corrupt recruitment machinery.
  • Four Education Department officials, including then Assistant Basic Education Officers and Block Education Officers, whose duty was to verify documents but who, investigators say, instead allowed the fraud to sail through unchecked.

The rot began surfacing when a complaint landed directly on the desk of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, detailing large-scale irregularities in teacher appointments dating back to 2014. A formal inquiry was ordered — and what followed was a stunning confirmation of the allegations.

The investigation found that many teachers were appointed without genuine qualifications, using fake degrees, forged experience certificates, and fraudulent training credentials. The inquiry also flagged the role of officials who either turned a blind eye or actively enabled the scam.

Rashmi Mishra, the current District Social Welfare Officer and complainant in the case, confirmed that all concerned schools have been informed of the damning inquiry report.

The FIR invokes serious charges, including:

  • Criminal conspiracy
  • Cheating by impersonation
  • Forgery of documents and electronic records
  • Using forged documents as genuine
  • Committing criminal acts in furtherance of a common intent

Mau Superintendent of Police Elamaran G said his department has already sought the original documents from the concerned departments to launch a full-scale probe.

This case not only exposes a deeply entrenched recruitment racket but also raises uncomfortable questions about how easily the gatekeepers of integrity in public education can be compromised.

For the children meant to benefit from Ambedkar Schools, the scam has stolen not just resources but the promise of quality education.
