Mumbai’s Tragic Tale of Love and Rage: Man Kills Ex-Girlfriend, Then Takes His Own Life

It was supposed to be a conversation — a final attempt to mend a broken bond. But what unfolded on a busy Friday morning in Mumbai’s Kalachowki turned into a chilling story of love, obsession, and irreversible rage.

24-year-old Sonu Barai, an unemployed youth from Ambewadi, couldn’t accept that his long-time girlfriend, Manisha Yadav, had moved on.

Their relationship had ended two weeks earlier, and Sonu — consumed by suspicion that she was seeing someone else — decided this breakup wouldn’t be the end of their story.

When they met near Digvijay Mill around 11 a.m., witnesses say there was tension in the air.

What began as a conversation quickly spiraled into violence. Overcome by jealousy and heartbreak, Sonu pulled a kitchen knife from his pocket and stabbed Manisha repeatedly in a fit of rage.

Panicked and bleeding, Manisha stumbled into the nearby Aastha Maternity and Surgical Nursing Home, desperately seeking refuge.

But Sonu, blinded by fury, followed her inside — and continued his brutal assault until she collapsed.

Moments later, realizing what he had done, Sonu turned the knife on himself, ending his life.

Both were rushed to hospitals — Manisha to JJ Hospital, and Sonu to KEM Hospital — but neither survived. What remained was the wreckage of two young lives destroyed by a toxic mix of love and vengeance.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R. Ragasudha confirmed the details, adding that a case is being registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police are recording statements from both families to piece together the events that led to this devastating end.

A pattern of love turned lethal

Sadly, this is not an isolated story. India has witnessed several such tragic “love revenge” incidents in recent years — from the Shraddha Walkar case in Delhi, where a live-in partner’s obsession turned murderous, to Karnataka’s 2023 Hubballi stabbing, where rejection led to rage.

Each of these incidents underscores a grim truth — when love turns possessive and unbalanced, it can become deadly.

As the city mourns Manisha and Sonu, Kalachowki adds another name to the growing list of crimes of passion that reveal the dark underbelly of heartbreak — where love, once pure, transforms into vengeance.
