In a significant step toward enriching civic awareness and security education, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is in the process of creating a dedicated classroom module on Operation Sindoor, aimed at helping school students understand India’s defence strategy, diplomatic response, and counter-terrorism efforts. The initiative comes in the wake of India’s bold military action following the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year.
Module Structure and Target Groups
According to sources familiar with the development, the module will be designed in two formats, catering to different age groups and academic levels:
-
Part One: For students of classes 3 to 8, using simplified language and visual aids to foster a foundational understanding of national security and India’s response to terrorism.
-
Part Two: For students of classes 9 to 12, offering a more detailed narrative, including strategic, geopolitical, and defence policy aspects of Operation Sindoor.
The 8–10-page module will include case studies, illustrations, real-time response charts, and basic maps to explain the events leading up to and following the retaliatory strikes launched by India in response to the April 22 terror attack.
Educational Objectives
A senior source from NCERT emphasised that the goal of the module is to instil awareness of national security and the role of institutions in ensuring peace and stability.
“The aim is to make students understand how nations respond to terror threats and how defence, diplomacy, and coordination between ministries play a role in national security,” the source said.
This marks one of the first instances where a real-time military operation is being translated into classroom learning, highlighting the importance of integrated learning that ties together civics, history, current affairs, and strategic studies.
Background: The Pahalgam Terror Attack
On April 22, India witnessed one of its most horrific terrorist incidents in recent memory when 26 civilians were gunned down in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, many of them in front of their families. The tragedy shocked the nation and prompted a swift and decisive military response.
Under Operation Sindoor, India launched precision strikes on terror launch pads and infrastructure in both Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and mainland Pakistan. The operation led to a four-day military standoff, marking one of the most significant escalations in recent Indo-Pak ties in years.
Parliamentary Discussion Set to Begin
The political ramifications of Operation Sindoor have also been profound. Following a week-long disruption in Parliament during the Monsoon Session, the Lok Sabha is now scheduled to begin a special 16-hour debate on the operation starting Monday.
