In a deeply disturbing incident that has shaken the academic community, a student of National Sanskrit University (NSU), Tirupati, filed a courageous complaint revealing months of sexual exploitation, blackmail, and intimidation by two assistant professors — an act that has drawn widespread condemnation from students, faculty, and the public.
The survivor wrote to the university’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) on November 24, pleading:
“I humbly request you to keep my identity secret and punish him so that other girls will not suffer.”
A Pattern of Predatory Abuse
According to those close to her, Assistant Professor Dr. Laxman Kumar allegedly sexually assaulted the young woman several times and recorded the act without her consent. His colleague, Dr. A. Sekhar Reddy, allegedly filmed the assault and later used the footage to blackmail and harass the survivor emotionally and physically.
Police investigations have confirmed that Kumar’s office was among the locations where the assaults occurred. Both men threatened to upload the videos online if the student dared to report them.
A faculty member familiar with the case said the survivor endured “severe mental trauma” for months before mustering the strength to disclose the abuse to her parents.
She subsequently discontinued her studies,s but not before ensuring she left behind a formal complaint so that “others do not face the same plight.”
Survivor’s Appeal: “Please Ensure My Safety”
In her written complaint, the student said:
“This situation has caused me severe mental stress and fear, and I request you to kindly take immediate action. I request guidance in the next steps to ensure my safety.”
ICC and Police Action
The ICC met between December 1 and 5, immediately seizing the mobile phones of the accused.
They later wrote to the university registrar, stating:
“There is a prima facie case… the confiscated phones must be examined by an authorised technical or forensic agency to retrieve any videos before concluding.”
On December 6, university authorities approached the Tirupati West police, who subsequently arrested both professors on charges including sexual assault, voyeurism, and outraging the modesty of a woman.
Inspector V. Murali Mohan said the survivor had been isolated and withdrawn for months, adding:
“None of her classmates knew what she was going through. She left the campus fearing for her safety after filing the complaint.”
He also clarified that rumours about her pregnancy were false.
The university has since suspended the accused professors, while internal inquiries continue to determine whether other students may have been targeted.
Shockwaves Across Campus
Outrage among students and faculty has been intense, with many describing the betrayal of trust by educators as “a disgraceful and unforgivable violation.” Members of the student body have said the revelations have left them feeling unsafe and shaken.
A senior faculty member noted:
“This was a low, despicable act by individuals entrusted with the responsibility to guide and educate. It has sent shockwaves across the campus.”
Political Storm Erupts
The case has escalated into a political flashpoint in Andhra Pradesh.
- YSRCP MP Maddila Gurumoorthy moved an adjournment motion in Lok Sabha (later rejected) and wrote to multiple national commissions, alleging attempts to hush up the case.
- TDP Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha refuted the allegations and said the government had ordered a high-level probe:
“No one will be spared. The Superintendent of Police is directly handling the investigation.”
University officials deny any delay in responding:
“The moment the complaint was lodged, we took every possible step to ensure the survivor’s safety,” a faculty member said.
Survivor’s Path Forward
The young woman has now moved back home. The university continues to stay in touch with her, encouraging her to resume her studies when she feels safe enough to return.
Her courage in reporting the abuse—despite fear, trauma, and pressure—has opened the door to justice and may protect countless others in the future.
