Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant three-nation foreign visit from June 15 to 19, covering Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Saturday.
The multi-leg diplomatic trip underscores India’s renewed focus on strengthening ties with Europe and its continued global engagement at multilateral forums.
Cyprus: Strengthening Mediterranean Ties
The Prime Minister will begin his tour in Cyprus, where he will be on an official visit from June 15 to 16, at the invitation of President Nikos Christodoulides. This visit will mark the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades, a gesture that underscores India’s intent to elevate its partnership with the Mediterranean country.
During his stay in Nicosia, PM Modi will hold high-level discussions with President Christodoulides, focusing on deepening bilateral cooperation in sectors such as trade, technology, and cultural exchange.
The Prime Minister is also scheduled to address a gathering of business leaders in the coastal city of Limassol, aiming to bolster economic engagement between the two nations.
The MEA noted that the visit comes at a strategically opportune time, as Cyprus is poised to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in early 2026.
It also follows the island nation’s vocal condemnation of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, and its stated intent to raise concerns around cross-border terrorism within the EU framework — a move welcomed by India.
Canada: Sixth Consecutive G-7 Participation
From Cyprus, the Prime Minister will travel to Canada on June 16-17, where he will participate in the G-7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This marks PM Modi’s sixth consecutive attendance at the G-7 Summit, reaffirming India’s growing role in addressing global challenges.
At the summit, the Prime Minister will join leaders of the G-7 member states, other partner nations, and heads of international organisations to deliberate on a wide range of global issues.
According to the MEA, key topics on the agenda will include energy security, technological advancement, and emerging innovations, particularly focusing on the interplay between Artificial Intelligence and the energy sector, as well as developments in quantum technologies.
PM Modi is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, though official sources noted that the specifics of these engagements are still being finalised.
Croatia: Historic First Visit by Indian PM
The final leg of the tour will see PM Modi travel to Croatia on June 18, at the invitation of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. This marks a historic first—no Indian Prime Minister has ever visited Croatia before.
In Zagreb, PM Modi will hold detailed bilateral discussions with PM Plenković and also meet with President Zoran Milanović.
The visit is expected to open new avenues of collaboration in areas such as digital technology, renewable energy, and higher education, while also reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening its presence in Central Europe and deepening engagement with the European Union.
A Reinstated Diplomatic Agenda
This tour follows the Prime Minister’s earlier cancellation of a scheduled European visit, which included Croatia, due to India’s humanitarian and evacuation efforts under Operation Sindoor.
The reinstatement of Croatia into its itinerary underscores India’s diplomatic resolve to maintain strong bilateral ties across Europe, despite past disruptions.
The MEA emphasised that this five-day diplomatic engagement will not only reinforce India’s multilateral credentials but also mark a significant stride in its efforts to deepen strategic partnerships across the Mediterranean, North America, and Central Europe.
