Prayagraj-Born Software Engineer Kills Wife Before Ending His Own Life in Gurgaon: A Family and Community in Shock

Gurgaon, Haryana. The quiet corridors of Millennia-1 society in Sector 37D were turned into a scene of horror on Sunday when Ajay Kumar, a 33-year-old software engineer originally from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, allegedly strangled his wife, Sweety Sharma, 28, before taking his own life.

The couple, both tech professionals, had been living in a rented apartment, away from their families, seemingly leading a peaceful life.

The shocking incident came to light after a friend in Bengaluru received a video message from Kumar, in which he confessed to the crime and expressed his plan to commit suicide.

In the video, Kumar also spoke about his regret and disappointment at failing to fulfill the dreams of a happy family with children, leaving friends and relatives in disbelief.

The Families Behind the Tragedy

Ajay Kumar hailed from a humble yet respected family in Prayagraj, where his father works as an electrician. Known to relatives as a quiet and intelligent man, he had carved a career in software engineering, which eventually brought him to Gurgaon.

Sweety Sharma came from Asansol, West Bengal, where her father runs a furniture business. The two had been in a long-term relationship before tying the knot in 2023. Both families are now grappling with shock and grief, struggling to understand how two young professionals, with promising lives, ended in such a catastrophic event.

Neighbours described the couple as private and reserved, with no visible quarrels or signs of marital strife. Yet, the horrifying incident raises painful questions: what drove Ajay to murder his wife and end his own life? Were there hidden pressures, unspoken struggles, or a personal crisis that none of their loved ones could see?

Discovery of the Bodies and Investigation

Police were alerted after the video confession reached Kumar’s friends. Acting quickly, relatives informed Sharma’s family in Delhi, prompting officers from the Sector 37 police station to break open the locked apartment door.

  • Sharma was found on the floor with ligature marks on her neck, confirming strangulation.
  • Kumar’s body was discovered nearby.
  • No suicide note was recovered.

Forensic teams have seized Kumar’s mobile phone and other electronic devices for examination, including deleted chats and call records. The couple’s last known communication was around noon on Sunday, when Sharma spoke to her mother. Her phone was later switched off, heightening the urgency of the investigation.

An autopsy is awaited to confirm the causes of death, while police continue to probe all possible angles. An FIR will be registered once Sharma’s family files a formal complaint.

A Community Left Questioning

For the Prayagraj community, this tragedy is a cruel shock. Ajay Kumar’s quiet upbringing and responsible family background make it hard to fathom how someone from a modest, respectable household could commit such a horrifying act. Friends and relatives are left asking painful questions:

  • Was there an emotional or psychological struggle that went unnoticed?
  • Could family pressures, personal frustrations, or unseen conflicts have triggered this extreme act?
  • How did a loving marriage, celebrated only two years ago, end in this catastrophic way?

The case is a stark reminder of the silent battles people face behind closed doors, even when everything seems normal on the surface. It also underscores the urgent need for awareness around mental health, stress, and conflict resolution in relationships.
