Protest Outside UPPSC Turns Tense as Students Demand Transparency in Recruitment Exams

PRAYAGRAJ: Competitive examination aspirants staged a protest outside the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) on Monday, demanding greater transparency and accountability in the conduct of recruitment examinations.

The demonstration, which began peacefully, later escalated into a confrontation with the police, leading to brief detentions.

The protest started around 11 a.m., when a limited number of students gathered outside the commission’s premises.

As the hours passed, the crowd steadily grew. By afternoon, a large number of aspirants from neighbouring districts had arrived, prompting the police to step up security measures.

When the police attempted to restrict the swelling crowd, tensions flared and clashes broke out between students and the police.

According to eyewitnesses, police resorted to mild use of force to disperse the crowd and detained several students.

Despite this, the protesters remained firm, camping outside Gate No. 2 of the UPPSC for nearly five hours.

Holding placards and banners, the students raised slogans accusing the commission of irregularities in recruitment examinations.

They alleged that the UPPSC routinely assures candidates that, after the declaration of final results, it will publish detailed information such as individual marks, category-wise cut-off scores, and revised answer keys.

However, the students claimed that even after the declaration of results for PCS examinations conducted in 2021, 2022, and 2023, this crucial information has still not been made public.

The protesters said that access to such data is essential to ensure fairness, verify evaluation processes, and build trust in the examination system.

They argued that the absence of transparency fuels suspicion and undermines the credibility of the recruitment process, affecting the futures of thousands of aspirants who invest years of preparation.

When some students attempted to move closer to the commission’s office to press their demands, police tried to stop them, triggering a scuffle.

As the situation threatened to spiral out of control, the police detained several protesters, creating an atmosphere of tension and confusion. Later, however, all detained students were released.

In view of the large gathering, extensive security arrangements were put in place. Personnel from the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), Rapid Action Force (RAF), and multiple police stations were deployed, along with officers of ACP rank and women police personnel.

Drone cameras were used for aerial surveillance, and fire brigade vehicles were also stationed in the area as a precautionary measure.

Despite the police action, the students remained resolute.

They made it clear that their agitation would continue until the commission provides concrete assurances and fulfils their demands for full disclosure of marks, cut-offs, and revised answer keys, thereby ensuring transparency and accountability in the recruitment process.
