Political circles in this city, once land of Nehru Gandhi family are rife with speculations that Rahul Gandhi and Varun Gandhi could contest Lok Sabha election from Rai Bareilly and Amethi.
Rahul is contesting Lok Sabha polls from Wayanad in Kerela. However, this time, political analysts do not predict a cakewalk for him.
He is locked in a three cornered contest with left’s Annie Raja and BJP’s K Surendran.
Rahul Gandhi was MP from Amethi from 2004 till 2019. He lost the 2019 election to BJP’s Smriti Irani but he won from Wayanad.
Rahul’s father late PM Rajeev Gandhi represented this seat from 1981 till his untimely death in a blast in 1991.
Rahul’s mother Sonia Gandhi contested election from here in 1999 and passed it on to her son Rahul in 2004.
On the other hand Rahul Gandhi’s cousin Varun Gandhi denied ticket by the BJP this time could be fielded from Rai Bareilly.
Varun’s mother Meneka Gandhi who had left Congress long time back after family split is contesting on BJP ticket from Pilibhit.
Looking at the uncertainty of result from Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi could choose the second option from Amethi this time again.
The Nehru Gandhi family is also well aware that party cadres were feeling demoralised ever since Nehru Gandhi family lost interest in this region.
Rahul’s grandmother later PM Indira Gandhi hardly visited Allahabad as a result this part of the state of Uttar Pradesh remained backward in development.
Anand Bhawan the ancestral house of the Nehru Gandhi family in Allahabad now renamed Prayagraj had been turned into a Museum containing relics of Indian National movement and congress including personal belongings of father of the nation Late MK Gandhi.
