Rahul Gandhi Slams Bihar Government, Calls State the ‘Crime Capital of India’ Amid Rising Law and Order Concerns

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a fierce attack on the ruling government in Bihar on Monday, expressing deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
In a strongly worded post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi alleged that Bihar has now turned into the “crime capital of India,” as criminal activities continue to surge, unchecked by authorities.

He blamed the state’s spiraling crime rate on the incompetence and political priorities of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, stating that the CM is more focused on political survival than public safety, while BJP ministers are allegedly engaged in rampant corruption, “earning commissions instead of serving the people.”
Rahul Gandhi’s comments were accompanied by screenshots of alarming media reports highlighting a shocking 31 murders reported over just 11 days, and a growing contract killing industry that appears to have taken root in the state.

Writing in Hindi, Gandhi said:

Bihar has become the ‘crime capital of India’ — there is fear in every alley and unease in every household. Unemployed youth are being exploited and turned into killers under this growing regime of fear and violence, what we call ‘GuNDA raj’.”

He further asserted that the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar would not be just another vote for regime change, but a decisive moment for the future of the state.

“This time, the vote is not just to change the government. It’s a vote to save Bihar.”

This is not the first time Rahul Gandhi has drawn attention to Bihar’s law and order situation. Earlier this month, he strongly condemned the brutal killing of prominent businessman Gopal Khemka, who was shot dead outside his residence in Patna by unidentified bike-borne assailants.
The incident shook the state, as it came almost seven years after Khemka’s son was similarly murdered in Hajipur, underscoring a troubling pattern of targeted killings and impunity.
Reacting to Khemka’s murder, Gandhi had said the horrifying incident once again demonstrated the complete collapse of governance under the current BJP-Nitish Kumar regime, accusing them of having jointly pushed Bihar into lawlessness and despair.

Opposition parties and civil society groups have echoed similar sentiments, with many pointing to a lack of police reform, a surge in organized crime, and the politicization of law enforcement as major contributors to the crisis.
Gandhi’s latest remarks are seen as part of the Congress party’s sharpened focus on Bihar ahead of the upcoming 2025 assembly elections, where the party is aiming to regain its foothold amid widespread public dissatisfaction and growing discontent over safety, unemployment, and governance.
As Bihar continues to grapple with escalating violence, many in the state are looking to the next election not only for leadership change but for the restoration of peace, justice, and public trust.
