Rahul Gandhi Slams Modi Government Over Trump’s ‘Dead Economy’ Jibe, Alleges Sellout to Billionaires at National Cost

In a fiery political broadside, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday endorsed U.S. President Donald Trump’s scathing assessment of India’s economic condition, calling it a truthful reflection of the dire state the country has been pushed into under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Responding to reporters in the Parliament complex on Trump’s recent remark that “India and Russia can take their dead economies down together”, Gandhi said unequivocally,

Yes, he is right. The Indian economy is, in fact, a dead economy.

He accused the Modi government of systematically dismantling the nation’s economic backbone to benefit billionaire tycoon Gautam Adani, adding,

The whole world sees what’s happening. Everyone except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister seems aware. The BJP has hollowed out India’s economy—not for national interest, but to serve Adani.

A Stinging Validation from Trump?

President Trump’s remarks, posted just hours after imposing a 25% tariff and additional penalties on Indian imports starting August 1, sparked a political storm.

I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care, Trump wrote on Truth Social, further criticizing India’s high tariffs and longstanding defense and energy ties with Russia.

He took particular aim at India’s strategic orientation, citing its membership in BRICS, its weapons purchases from Russia, and continued oil imports from Moscow, all of which he blamed for the punitive trade actions.

In the same post, Trump launched a personal tirade against Russia’s Dmitry Medvedev, calling him a “failed former president” who is “entering very dangerous territory.”

Congress Launches All-Out Attack on Modi’s “Friendship Diplomacy”

The Congress Party, seizing the moment, unleashed a barrage of political criticism against PM Modi, accusing him of mismanaging India’s foreign policy and damaging its strategic autonomy.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a strongly worded post on X, questioned the Prime Minister’s continued silence over Trump’s escalating accusations and trade sanctions.

Modi ji observed a ‘Maun Vrat’ in Parliament when Trump spoke of ceasefire diplomacy, and now he remains mute as the U.S. President hurls insults and imposes penalties on India, Kharge wrote.

He added,

Trump’s tariff war will crush Indian trade, hit MSMEs, and devastate farmers. Industries across sectors will bleed. And this is how ‘friend’ Trump rewards ‘Namaste Trump’ and ‘Abki Baar Trump Sarkar’?

Kharge accused the Modi administration of abandoning India’s time-tested non-aligned policy in favor of a failed personality-driven diplomacy.

The justifications given by Trump—India’s oil and arms imports from Russia, BRICS membership, and imagined hostility to the U.S. dollar—strike at the very heart of our independent foreign policy, he noted.

He contrasted this with the achievements of the UPA government under Dr. Manmohan Singh, who secured a nuclear waiver from 45 countries, including the U.S., while maintaining India’s strategic flexibility.

They amended their laws to support us, yet we were never bound to source fuel only from America. Our sovereignty and options remained intact, Kharge emphasized.

Warning of a Dangerous Geopolitical Realignment

In a stark warning, Kharge also raised alarm over an emerging America-China-Pakistan axis, and Trump’s alleged overtures to Pakistan for oil deals, suggesting that India is being diplomatically isolated due to Modi’s missteps.

While Trump threatens India and cozies up to Pakistan, our Prime Minister remains focused on photo-ops and public relations. This is not foreign policy—it is a national liability,” Kharge said.

He closed his remarks with a call to action: This is a time to put the nation above the narrative. The Modi government must step beyond PR campaigns and act in the interest of India’s sovereignty, economy, and global standing.”

As India reels from the economic and strategic fallout of the U.S. sanctions, the public, industry, and political leadership are left to grapple with the harsh consequences of misplaced alliances and unclear foreign policy priorities. The stakes are no longer political—they are existential.
