Rail passenger allegedly assaulted by BJP MLA’s men

A disturbing incident aboard the Delhi-Bhopal Vande Bharat Express has sparked outrage after a male passenger was violently assaulted by a group of individuals, reportedly over a disagreement involving seat allocation linked to a BJP legislator’s family.

The assault, captured on mobile phones and now circulating widely on social media, has reignited concerns over VIP culture and misuse of political influence in public spaces.

The incident occurred last Thursday as BJP MLA Rajeev Singh, who represents Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, was traveling on the high-speed Vande Bharat train with his wife and young son.

According to reports, Singh was seated in the rear section of the coach, while his wife and son were assigned seats near the front, adjacent to another male passenger.

Trouble allegedly began when Singh’s family requested the man to swap his seat so they could sit together. The passenger, whose identity has not been made public, politely refused to give up his reserved seat. The disagreement reportedly remained verbal at first and did not escalate during the train journey.

However, the situation took a shocking turn upon the train’s arrival at Jhansi station. Several men—allegedly known associates or aides of the MLA—boarded the train and brutally attacked the passenger in his seat. Eyewitnesses described the incident as unprovoked and deeply violent.

Videos of the assault, now viral, depict the man being punched repeatedly, slapped, and even hit with slippers, while he tries in vain to shield himself from the blows.

In the footage, blood is seen pouring from his nose, staining his clothes, as other passengers looked on in alarm, many too afraid to intervene.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Jhansi filed a non-cognizable report (NCR)—a legal complaint that does not immediately require the arrest of the accused or a full investigation—based on a counter-complaint lodged by MLA Rajeev Singh himself.

In his complaint, the MLA claimed that the co-passenger had misbehaved with his family during the journey and had allegedly called others to the station to create a disturbance.

He accused the victim of indecent behavior, although footage and eyewitness accounts appear to contradict these allegations, showing the man being attacked rather than being the aggressor.

Despite the video evidence, as of now, the authorities have not confirmed the identities of the attackers or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the case.

The lack of swift legal action has drawn criticism on social media and from civil rights groups, who have called for an impartial investigation and accountability regardless of political connections.

The incident has stirred a larger conversation around the entitlement of public figures, the use of force and intimidation in public services, and the safety of ordinary citizens on India’s premium trains.

Many have questioned how individuals could be allowed to board the train at a station only to assault a passenger, seemingly without interference from railway or police officials.

As the footage continues to be shared widely, calls are growing for the Railway Ministry and law enforcement agencies to intervene decisively.

Advocates are urging a thorough investigation, punishment of the guilty, and a reassessment of how political influence is exerted in public spaces like trains, which are meant to be neutral and safe zones for all citizens.

Meanwhile, public confidence in the rule of law is being tested, with many watching closely to see whether justice will be served in a case where power, privilege, and violence appear to have converged in deeply troubling ways.
