By RubyZaidi
The highly awaited cinematic spectacle, Ramayana, helmed by celebrated director Nitesh Tiwari, recently revealed its first look—sending waves of excitement across the Indian film industry and among fans globally.
Featuring an all-star cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi, the film has already generated significant anticipation. Produced by Namit Malhotra under the banner of Prime Focus Studios, Ramayana is being hailed as one of the most ambitious Indian films ever attempted.
With an astronomical budget of ₹900 crores, #Ramayana is being crafted as a cinematic masterpiece and a visual celebration of Indian mythology. The ensemble cast not only features lead roles but also boasts several high-profile actors in crucial supporting parts.
Veteran actor Anil Kapoor has been cast as King Janak, father of Sai Pallavi’s Sita, while the legendary Amitabh Bachchan will make a powerful special appearance as the noble bird Jatayu.
Adding a nostalgic twist, Arun Govil, who once famously portrayed Lord Rama in Ramanand Sagar’s television adaptation, will now be seen in the role of King Dasharath, with Indira Krishnan as Queen Kaushalya, Ram’s mother.
The scheming characters of Kaikayi and Manthara will be portrayed by Lara Dutta and Sheeba Chaddha, respectively. #Kaikayi and #Manthara, pivotal in triggering the epic’s turning point, are expected to be portrayed with powerful performances.
When it comes to the demon king Ravana’s clan, the casting is equally star-studded. #RakulPreetSingh will take on the role of Shurpanakha, Ravana’s sister, while Kajal Aggarwal steps into the regal shoes of Queen Mandodari. Ravana’s mighty brothers will be played by Bobby Deol as the ferocious Kumbhakarna, and Vijay Sethupathi as the righteous Vibhishan, both adding significant gravitas to the storyline.
Vikrant Massey, lauded for his recent performance in 12th Fail, has been roped in to play Meghnad (Indrajit), Ravana’s valiant son. The role of Bharat, Lord Ram’s loyal younger brother, will be essayed by Adinath Kothare, known for his appearance in 83.
Meanwhile, Kunal Kapoor is set to appear as Lord Indra, bringing his signature intensity and screen presence to the divine character. Vivek Oberoi will join the cast as Vidyutjihva, husband to Rakul Preet Singh’s character, expanding the demonic dimension of the narrative.
A special treat for mythology enthusiasts will be the return of Mohit Raina, who once again steps into the sacred form of Lord Shiva. #MohitRaina, best known for his role as Mahadev on television, will don the iconic tiger skin, Mundamala (garland of skulls), serpents, and Rudraksha, reviving a role that has become synonymous with his career.
#LegalControversy:
However, amid all the excitement and grandeur, Ramayana has found itself entangled in a legal web. The project is currently facing intellectual property-related complications, stemming from a conflict between Allu Mantena Media Ventures LLP and Prime Focus Technologies Limited.
At the heart of the issue lies a dispute over the legitimate ownership and usage rights of the ‘Project Ramayana’ script and associated materials. According to a public legal notice issued by Allu Mantena Media Ventures LLP, Prime Focus Technologies had initiated acquisition discussions in April 2024. However, the deal never came to legal fruition as Prime Focus allegedly failed to complete the requisite financial obligations needed to finalize the rights transfer.
This #legaldispute has cast a temporary shadow over the production, and stakeholders await further developments as the matter proceeds through legal channels. Despite this, fans and industry insiders remain hopeful that the film will overcome the hurdles and deliver a cinematic retelling of the epic saga like never before.
