In a stunning turn that has sent shockwaves through Bihar’s political landscape, Rohini Acharya — the daughter who once donated a kidney to save Lalu Prasad Yadav’s life — has announced she is quitting politics and severing ties with her own family.
Her declaration comes just a day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal suffered a bruising defeat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, but those close to the family say the storm had been gathering for months.
For decades, the Yadav clan — led by Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi — symbolised power, charisma, and grassroots authority in Bihar.
Their nine children grew up as the heirs to a political empire. Yet, the very size of this dynasty later became the seed of its internal fractures.
Tensions intensified with the marginalisation of the mercurial elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, and the growing clout of Tejashwi’s confidant and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Yadav.
His increasing influence, particularly an incident where he occupied a prime seat on a campaign bus—traditionally reserved for Lalu or Tejashwi—ignited whispers within the family. For Rohini, this was the final straw.
Rohini Acharya, long admired as the “kidney dene wali beti” after her lifesaving donation to Lalu in 2022, had once been a symbol of the family’s emotional strength.
When she contested the Saran Lok Sabha seat in 2024, voters embraced her as the heir to her father’s legacy, though she eventually lost to BJP veteran Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
Born under the ‘Rohini Nakshatra’ and named after the doctor who delivered her, Rohini carried both sentiment and symbolism within the Yadav household.
But behind the scenes, family conflicts had been widening. Her marriage in 2002 to software engineer Samresh Singh, once celebrated with pomp and controversy, had also highlighted the pressures and expectations tied to the Yadav clan’s stature.
On Saturday, Rohini publicly declared, “I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family… This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do… and I am taking all the blame.”
Her words reflect not just personal anguish but the deeper turmoil consuming Bihar’s most influential political family.
What once stood as a formidable fortress of power is now grappling with internal rifts, wounded pride, and a rapidly changing political environment.
Rohini’s exit marks more than a personal decision — it symbolises the fading aura of a dynasty that once dominated Bihar’s political imagination.
As the dust settles, the story of the Yadav family is beginning to resemble a Greek tragedy — marked by ambition, loyalty, sacrifice, and eventual implosion.
