The Railway Protection Force (RPF) sniffer dogs, specially trained to detect explosives, narcotics, and other harmful contraband, enjoy privileges on the Indian Railways that even their human handlers do not.
Whenever deployed for duty across stations, these canine officers are issued First AC travel passes, while the inspector or sub-inspector (Daroga) accompanying them is allotted a berth in Third AC.
This unusual arrangement underscores the high status and importance accorded to these dogs, whose sharp instincts often succeed where human efforts fall short.
The railways take meticulous care to ensure the comfort and efficiency of the canine squad. During travel, separate arrangements are made for their movement, with provisions for food, water, and rest.
Even outside of journeys, their diets include meat, milk, and nutritional supplements to keep them fit and alert. Regular medical checkups further ensure their health and stamina, as their well-being directly impacts the safety of thousands of passengers.
The reason behind such preferential treatment is clear: these dogs are often the first line of defense against grave threats.
From detecting bombs hidden in luggage to sniffing out narcotics and other objectionable items that endanger society, they provide a level of vigilance that no officer, regardless of rank, can match. Their role is not merely supportive but absolutely decisive in preventing crimes and protecting railway property and lives.
Their presence on trains also fascinates passengers, who are often seen admiring their discipline, clicking selfies, or engaging with them.
Yet behind the admiration lies a serious truth: these canine officers are an indispensable part of India’s railway security network. While their handlers may travel in Third AC, the dogs themselves ride First AC—not as a luxury, but as recognition of their extraordinary contribution to public safety.
