Seven Dead In Delhi After Wall Collapses In Torrential Rains

In a tragic incident in south-east Delhi’s Jaitpur area, seven people lost their lives and one person sustained injuries after a wall collapsed early Saturday morning.

The collapse followed relentless overnight rainfall that pounded the national capital, causing widespread chaos and damage.

The wall, which was adjacent to an old temple, fell onto a cluster of *jhuggies* (makeshift huts) occupied by scrap dealers and their families.

These residents, mostly migrant workers from West Bengal earning a livelihood as rag-pickers, were caught completely off-guard in their sleep.

Rescue Efforts and Victim Details

According to Delhi Police, the control room received an emergency call at 9:13 a.m., reporting that multiple people were trapped under debris.

Rescue operations were launched immediately, involving Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Teams worked swiftly to clear rubble and search for survivors.

Eight people were pulled out and rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital. Sadly, despite medical efforts, seven victims — three men, two women, and two young girls — succumbed to their injuries.

The sole survivor, identified as 27-year-old Hasibul from Murshidabad, West Bengal, remains under treatment.

Police stated that a thorough search was carried out at the site to ensure no other victims were buried under the debris.

“The preliminary cause appears to be the intense rainfall, but we will also examine the structural condition of the wall, its ownership, and any negligence involved.

Statements from witnesses and survivors will be recorded,” said a senior police officer. An FIR has been registered under relevant provisions of law, and a detailed investigation is underway.

Political Reaction and Public Outrage

The tragedy has sparked political criticism. Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi unit chief, Saurabh Bharadwaj, accused the ruling BJP of inaction, stating:

“Seven people have died on Raksha Bandhan, yet no minister or senior official was on the ground. Instead, they are enjoying themselves while Delhi is left at the mercy of God.”

Rainfall Impact Across Delhi

The India Meteorological Department reported that between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday, the Safdarjung weather station — Delhi’s official measuring point — recorded 78.8 mm of rainfall.

A further 26 mm fell during the rest of the day. The weather department had already issued a ‘red alert’ — the highest-level warning — for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, urging authorities to take preventive action.

Similar Incidents and Broader Impact

In a separate incident, a wall at an underground Delhi Metro Rail Corporation construction site near Vasant Kunj in south Delhi collapsed, damaging a section of the Mahipalpur–Mehrauli Road between Fortis Hospital and Mahipalpur. No injuries were reported.

Another partial collapse occurred at an under-construction site near D-6, Vasant Kunj, under the Masoodpur flyover, also without casualties.

The heavy downpour caused severe waterlogging in multiple parts of the city, including Connaught Place, Dhaula Kuan, and Kalkaji, disrupting traffic and public movement.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding and near old, unstable structures that may be at risk of collapse during ongoing monsoon rains.
