Sharda University Student Dies by Suicide in Hostel Room; Family Alleges Harassment by Faculty Members

Greater Noida – A 21-year-old dental student at Sharda University, Jyoti Jongda, tragically ended her life by hanging herself in her hostel room at the Mandel Hostel on Saturday, triggering outrage, protests, and a police investigation.
Her father, Ramesh Jongda, a resident of Gurugram, has filed a formal complaint at the Knowledge Park Police Station, alleging that persistent harassment and mental torture by university staff drove his daughter to take the extreme step.
In his complaint, Jongda has demanded strict legal action against members of the university’s faculty, holding them directly responsible for his daughter’s death. He has accused the staff of mental harassment, emotional abuse, and even tampering with evidence related to her suicide.
According to Jongda, university authorities failed to notify police and the family promptly, and instead shifted Jyoti’s body to Sharda Hospital without informing them.
Suicide Note Mentions Faculty Members by Name
Greater Noida Police have confirmed that Jyoti left behind a detailed suicide note, in which she specifically named two faculty members from the PCP (Pre-Clinical Prosthodontics) and Dental Material departments. In the note, she wrote:

“If I died, the teachers of PCP and Dental Material are to blame. Mahinder Sir and Shairy Ma’am are responsible for my death. They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been under stress because of them for a long time. I want them to face the same thing. I am sorry. I can’t live like this anymore.”

The note painted a picture of prolonged psychological pressure and an academic environment filled with fear and humiliation, which allegedly contributed to her deteriorating mental health.
FIR Filed Under New Indian Penal Code
Based on Jongda’s allegations and the contents of the suicide note, the police have lodged an FIR under Sections 108, 238, 79, 352, and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 (BNS), the recently implemented Indian Penal Code.
Two accused faculty members, Mahinder and Shairy, have since been arrested. Sudhir Kumar, Additional DCP of Greater Noida, confirmed that a full investigation is now underway to determine the accountability of university staff and the exact circumstances that led to Jyoti’s death.
Allegations of Institutional Negligence and Destruction of Evidence
In his FIR, Ramesh Jongda alleged that even after repeated assurances from senior university officials, including Dean M. Siddarth, Anurag Awasthi, and Ashish Chaudhary (HOD of the BDS Department), his daughter continued to face mistreatment. He added that faculty members not only ignored prior concerns but also threatened Jyoti with academic repercussions if she raised her voice.

“They warned her that her project work would not be approved and that she wouldn’t be allowed to appear for exams if she kept complaining,” Jongda alleged.

He further claimed that on July 17, 2025, the day of the incident, Jyoti was once again threatened and insulted by the same faculty members named in her note, which likely became the final trigger for her decision.
Adding to the chaos on campus, the grieving mother of Jyoti reportedly slapped the Head of Department in a fit of anguish and fury, sparking further turmoil among the student community.
Campus Protests and Student Outrage
The incident has sparked intense unrest among students at Sharda University, with hundreds staging protests and demonstrations, demanding justice for their fellow student. Placards, slogans, and chants filled the campus as students insisted on transparency, accountability, and legal consequences for those named in Jyoti’s final letter.
University Responds: Suspensions and Internal Inquiry
Responding to the serious allegations, Sharda University spokesperson Dr. Ajit Kumar announced that the university has suspended the faculty members named in the FIR and has initiated a high-level internal inquiry.

“We have already ordered an independent probe into the matter. The investigation report is expected within five days. Anyone found guilty will face strict disciplinary action,” Dr. Kumar said.

An unnamed university official added that the administration is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities and assured that justice will be delivered:

“Jyoti was one of our own. Her loss is deeply painful for the entire Sharda family. We are committed to ensuring a thorough and fair investigation. Those responsible will not be spared.”

A Cry for Justice and Need for Reform
The tragic incident has once again brought to the forefront the mental health challenges and power dynamics prevalent in academic institutions. Many are now calling for stronger mechanisms to safeguard students’ well-being, including the creation of independent redressal cells, increased access to counseling, and better oversight of faculty conduct.
As the investigation progresses, public sentiment remains intensely focused on accountability, justice for Jyoti, and systemic reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.
