Shashi Tharoor summoned by Delhi High Court over defamation plea by Rajeev Chandrasekhar

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a summons to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in connection with a defamation case filed by BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav directed the registration of the plant as a suit and scheduled the next hearing for April 28. “Issue summons to the defendant (Tharoor). List the matter before the joint registrar on April 28,” the court stated.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, in his defamation suit, alleged that Shashi Tharoor made false and defamatory remarks in various public forums in April 2024, which significantly harmed his personal and professional reputation. The BJP leader has requested the court to restrain Tharoor from making any further defamatory statements against him.

Chandrasekhar is also seeking a public apology and Rs 10 crore in damages from Tharoor, accusing him of defamation and tarnishing his image. The case stems from Tharoor’s alleged statements during a television interview in which he purportedly claimed that Chandrasekhar had offered money to voters during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP leader is being represented in the case by the law firm Karanjawala & Company. The court proceedings are set to continue in April.
