South Africa Dominate Day 2 in Guwahati as India Face a Mountain to Climb

South Africa turned a strong position into complete control on Day 2 of the Guwahati Test.

Starting from their overnight score of 247/6, they piled up a huge total of 489, putting India under immense pressure and almost shutting the door on India’s chances of winning.

India ended the day at 9/0, with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul surviving just over six overs in fading light. But with South Africa already 480 runs ahead, India are staring at a nearly impossible task.

The day belonged to Senuran Muthusamy and Marco Jansen. Muthusamy scored his first Test century—a calm, confident knock that frustrated India.

Jansen, coming in at No. 9, hit several big shots and pushed the total close to 500.

Earlier, Verreynne and Muthusamy batted through the entire morning session without losing a wicket. Jadeja finally struck after lunch, removing Verreynne, but the damage was already done.

Looking back at Day 1, India had staged a small fightback by taking four wickets in the final session.

South Africa had built two solid partnerships earlier in the day, but Indian bowlers like Bumrah, Kuldeep, Jadeja and Siraj chipped in with wickets to bring the score to 247/6 by stumps.

At the toss, Rishabh Pant—captaining India for the first time due to Shubman Gill’s neck injury—lost to Temba Bavuma, who chose to bat. India made two changes to their XI, bringing in Nitish Kumar Reddy and B Sai Sudharsan, while South Africa brought in spinner Muthusamy.

This Guwahati Test is unique because the timings have been changed to maximise daylight, with play starting at 9 AM and finishing around 4 PM. Tea is taken before lunch due to the early sunset in this region.

By the end of Day 2, South Africa looked overwhelmingly ahead, already holding one hand on the series trophy. India still trails by 480 runs, with only a maximum of 80 overs possible each day from here. An Indian victory appears far out of reach unless something extraordinary happens.
