During the 1980s and 1990s, Sridevi reigned as one of the most iconic and adored stars of Indian cinema. She was admired not just for her unparalleled acting prowess but also for her magnetic screen presence that left millions spellbound.
Among those captivated by her charm was film producer Boney Kapoor. Having collaborated with her on several films, Boney found himself completely enamored by her—so much so that he eventually fell deeply in love, despite already being married and the father of two children, Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor.
In a recent conversation with Chanda Kochhar on her YouTube channel, Boney revisited some of the most personal and emotional chapters of his life.
He revealed that before his relationship with Sridevi became public knowledge, his children and Sridevi actually shared a warm bond. Particularly, Arjun Kapoor was fond of Sridevi when she briefly stayed with their family.
Boney recalled the moment against the backdrop of one of Mumbai’s darkest chapters—the 1993 serial bomb blasts. At the time, Sridevi was staying at the Hotel Sea Rock. Concerned for her safety, Boney invited her to move into his family home.
He remembered those days vividly:When Sridevi came to my house, after the bomb blasts had happened, she got along very well with Arjun.
He was her favourite when she stayed with us. Arjun had no idea what was really going on between us at the time,” Boney shared, reflecting on how fate unfolded in ways he never fully anticipated.
Earlier, in an interview with Filmfare, Boney had also revealed that he had proposed to Sridevi while they were both in Chennai. However, the actress distanced herself after the proposal, choosing not to speak to him for nearly six to eight months.
Yet destiny drew them back together when the blasts shook Mumbai. Concerned and protective, Boney insisted that she leave the hotel for safety. From then until the release of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja in May 1993, Sridevi stayed at Boney’s residence.
The relationship gradually became official, and in 1996, Boney and Sridevi tied the knot, making their marriage public the following year.
Their union was blessed with two daughters: Janhvi Kapoor, born in 1997, and Khushi Kapoor, born in 2000. Despite public scrutiny and the complexities of their relationship, Boney and Sridevi’s bond grew stronger with time, grounded in love, respect, and family.
A Sudden, Heartbreaking End
Tragedy struck on 24 February 2018, when Sridevi passed away unexpectedly in Dubai. She was there to attend a family wedding, but in a shocking turn of events, she died by accidental drowning in a hotel bathtub. The news spread like wildfire, plunging the film industry and her fans across the globe into collective mourning.
Her death at the age of 54 was not just untimely but devastating, creating a permanent void in Indian cinema. Sridevi was celebrated for her versatility—effortlessly transitioning from comedic roles in films like ChaalBaaz to powerful emotional performances in Sadma and English Vinglish.
The void she left was felt not only on screen but also deeply within her family, who lost a beloved wife and mother.
For Boney Kapoor, her passing was the shattering of a decades-long companionship marked by passion, trials, and triumphs.
For Janhvi and Khushi, it was the loss of their anchor just as they were stepping into their adult lives. For millions of fans, it was the end of an era, the silencing of a voice that had defined Indian cinema for over four decades.
Even years after her demise, Sridevi’s legacy endures. Her performances continue to inspire young actors, and her memory is cherished by her admirers as a timeless symbol of grace, beauty, and artistry.
