Prayagraj (Varuna Bazar, Handia): After a brief lull, street crime has again shown its ugly face in Prayagraj. On Sunday evening, a jeweller was ambushed and looted while returning home from his shop in Phulpur.
According to the complaint, Shivshankar Soni, a resident of Varuna Bazar who runs a jewellery shop at Bhogwara under Phulpur police station limits, shut his shop as usual and set off for home on his motorcycle. The moment he crossed the Belatalabad unmanned railway crossing, two motorcycles with five assailants intercepted him.
Before Soni could react, the men brandished a country-made pistol, threatened to kill him, and forced open the bike’s storage compartment. They looted 2 kilograms of silver, ₹15,000 in cash, and his mobile phone. When he resisted, the attackers beat him up, leaving him injured, and then sped away.
Residents rushed to help and informed the police. Officers arrived at the spot, and ASP (Phulpur) Pankaj Lalwani said an FIR will be registered upon receiving the victim’s written complaint and that teams are searching for the robbers.
This brazen attack on a busy route is a grim reminder that looting and highway robberies appear to be picking up again in Prayagraj. An uncompromising crackdown, stronger night patrolling, and swift arrests are essential to send a clear message: crime will not be tolerated, and criminals will face decisive action.
