Sub-Inspector Crushed to Death by Dumper in Pratapgarh; Nine-Year-Old Boy Also Killed in Separate Pickup Accident

PRATAPGARH (Uttar Pradesh): In two tragic road accidents on Sunday, a woman police station sub-inspector lost his life after being run over by a dumper truck, while a nine-year-old boy was crushed to death by a speeding pickup vehicle in separate incidents that left residents grief-stricken and angry.

Sub-Inspector Crushed to Death on Duty

The first incident occurred near Sarai Veerbhadra on the bypass under the Kunda Kotwali area of Pratapgarh district.

According to police reports, Sub-Inspector Mahanand Tripathi (56), a resident of Sardhua village in Chitrakoot, was on official duty when the fatal accident took place.

Tripathi, who had joined the police force in 1988 as a constable and was currently posted at the Mahila (Women) Police Station in Pratapgarh, was heading to Antu on his motorcycle around 9:30 a.m. to investigate a pending case.

As he approached the bypass near Sarai Veerbhadra, a dumper loaded with cement bricks coming from the opposite direction hit his motorcycle with tremendous force.

The impact threw him off balance, and he fell onto the road. Tragically, the dumper’s rear wheel ran over his head, killing him instantly.

The driver fled the scene immediately, leaving behind chaos and panic. The stretch of road was reportedly deserted at the time of the accident, which delayed immediate assistance.

Local passersby soon alerted authorities.

On receiving the information, Medical College Outpost In-charge Akhilesh Pratap, City Kotwal Neeraj Yadav, and CO City Prashant Raj Hudda rushed to the spot.

The body was recovered and sent to Pratapgarh Medical College for postmortem examination.

Later, using CCTV footage, police managed to trace and seize the dumper truck involved in the incident.

An FIR has been lodged at Antu Police Station against the unidentified driver under sections related to rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide. Police said that a manhunt is underway to arrest the absconding driver.

The news of the officer’s death has cast a pall of sorrow over the police fraternity. Colleagues described Sub-Inspector Tripathi as a “sincere and disciplined officer” who had served the department with dedication for over three decades.

Nine-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Run Over by Pickup

In a separate incident in the same region, tragedy struck a family in Kunda when a nine-year-old boy was crushed under a speeding pickup truck while accompanying his mother to the fields for paddy harvesting.

According to local reports, the accident took place near Sarai Veerbhadra. The boy, walking beside his mother, was suddenly hit by the pickup, killing him on the spot.

Shocked and devastated, the grieving family and villagers blocked the road by placing the child’s body on it, leading to a massive traffic jam.

Police arrived at the scene swiftly, detained the pickup driver, and cleared the blockade after persuading the protestors.

The boy’s mother filed a formal complaint, following which an FIR was registered, and the child’s body was sent for postmortem.

Authorities have assured strict legal action against the driver responsible for the incident.

Both tragedies have reignited public concern over increasing road accidents in Uttar Pradesh, often caused by reckless driving, poor road monitoring, and a lack of enforcement of traffic norms.

Residents have urged the administration to take stronger measures to curb such incidents and ensure accountability for negligent drivers.
