Tesla Set to Launch in India with First Experience Centre in Mumbai’s BKC: Focus on Showrooms, Not Manufacturing

In a major milestone for India’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape, global EV pioneer Tesla, led by billionaire entrepreneur #ElonMusk, is officially entering the Indian market with the grand launch of its first experience centre in Mumbai’s upscale #BandraKurlaComplex (BKC).
The much-anticipated launch event is scheduled for next week, and select guests have already received exclusive invites, which describe the occasion as the formal “launch of Tesla in India.”

While the company has remained tight-lipped about the specifics of its India strategy, this event clearly signals Tesla’s intent to establish a brand presence and direct customer engagement platform through premium urban showrooms, commonly referred to as experience centres.
Earlier in June, Tesla took a significant logistical step by leasing 24,565 square feet of warehouse space at the Lodha Industrial and Logistics Park in Mumbai.
The long-term lease, spanning five years, underscores the company’s operational commitment to the Indian market.

Despite these developments, Tesla has not yet announced plans to manufacture vehicles in India. In fact, Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy confirmed last month that the company is currently not interested in setting up a manufacturing plant in the country but is instead focused on building a retail and distribution footprint through experience centres and showrooms.
This decision has sparked conversation globally, especially after former #USPresidentDonaldTrump expressed concerns that any Tesla factory in India could be considered “unfair” to the United States, especially if it is seen as a strategy to circumvent tariffs and boost exports.

Tesla had previously explored tariff concessions, requesting that the Indian government allow reduced import duties—specifically, a 70% cut for electric cars priced below $40,000 and a 100% cut for higher-end models. However, the Indian government has taken a firm stance on this matter.

#CommerceMinisterPiyushGoyal stated earlier this year that while India welcomes all global EV manufacturers and is committed to building a robust EV ecosystem, it will not customize trade or tariff policies for any one company, including Tesla.

He clarified that India’s trade laws must remain fair and consistent, aiming to attract a wide range of manufacturers, not just tailor policies to accommodate the needs of a single corporate entity.

The government’s position reflects its broader ambition of reducing carbon emissions, lowering the national oil import bill, and promoting sustainable transportation. It wants to create a level playing field that supports the growth of the entire #EVecosystem in the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

With Tesla’s formal entry into India through its Mumbai experience centre, Indian consumers will finally get a first-hand look at the company’s advanced electric vehicles. However, the road to local manufacturing remains uncertain, as policy, tariffs, and global trade dynamics continue to shape Tesla’s long-term plans in India.
