Nepal, a nation whose economy is deeply intertwined with tourism, has once again come into global focus for all the wrong reasons. Despite depending heavily on visitors from across the world — particularly from India — for livelihood and revenue, the country is witnessing a disturbing rise in reckless violence that threatens its very foundation.

This reality was underscored when an Indian tourist bus, returning from the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, was brutally attacked near Sonauli on the India-Nepal border.

The bus, carrying 49 Indian pilgrims, became the target of stone-pelting by protesters. Windows were smashed, and several passengers, including women and elderly individuals, sustained injuries. Driver Ramu Nishad recounted the terrifying ordeal:

“We were returning after darshan at the Pashupatinath temple when suddenly a mob surrounded our bus and began pelting stones. They did not care that there were women and the elderly among us.”

The injured were rushed to a hospital in Kathmandu for treatment, while the rest of the group was flown back to India on a special plane arranged by the Indian Embassy with assistance from Nepalese authorities.

This shocking incident comes at a time when Nepal continues to grapple with widespread unrest, led by a youth-driven Gen Z movement demanding sweeping political reforms, including the dissolution of Parliament and amendments to the Constitution.

Protesters have already torched Parliament, government offices, and even the homes of ministers — an unprecedented attack on the state’s institutions.

The attack on Indian tourists, however, highlights a dangerous erosion of basic common sense among protesters.

Tourism is the backbone of Nepal’s economy. From trekking guides in the Himalayas to hotel staff in Kathmandu, lakhs of families survive because of this sector. Attacking foreign visitors — especially Indians, who form one of the largest groups of tourists in Nepal — is not only reckless but also suicidal for the country’s economic health.

By endangering tourists, protesters are sending out a chilling message to the international community: that Nepal is unsafe.

Immigration authorities have since announced special provisions to help foreign nationals stranded due to curfews and travel restrictions.

According to The Himalayan Times, international visitors with visas valid through 8 September can now regularise their stay and obtain exit permits without penalties.

Yet, the larger concern remains: Who is orchestrating such waves of destructive violence? Burning government buildings and now attacking tourists shows a complete disregard for the nation’s stability and prosperity. In their bid to push political demands, protesters are destroying their own country’s resources and threatening its future.

For a country that lives and breathes on tourism, such mindless actions risk crippling Nepal’s economy and tarnishing its international image for years to come.
