Tragedy Strikes at Dawn—Three CRPF Jawans Killed in Udhampur; Locals, Officials Rush to Rescue

At approximately 10:30 AM on Thursday, a routine assignment turned into a heart-stopping tragedy as a CRPF vehicle skidded off the Kandva–Basantgarh road in Udhampur district, Jammu & Kashmir, and plunged into a deep gorge.

The ill-fated vehicle was carrying 23 brave CRPF personnel when the accident occurred. Three jawans lost their lives—two on the spot and one succumbed later in the hospital—and 15 others were seriously injured. Residents and police sprang into action, launching an immediate rescue operation. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for critical care.

Voices of Compassion Rise: Union Minister & Lt. Governor Respond

On X, Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed his deep sorrow: Disturbing to receive the news of a road accident involving a CRPF vehicle in the Kandva–Basantgarh area… locals have voluntarily come forward to assist. All possible help is being ensured.”

In solidarity, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha conveyed his grief: Saddened by the loss of CRPF personnel… We will never forget their exemplary service to the nation… Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Not the First—A Disturbing Pattern of CRPF Road Accidents

Distressingly, this tragedy is not isolated. Jammu and Kashmir’s treacherous roads have seen multiple such mishaps involving CRPF personnel:

  • April 2025, Budgam: A CRPF vehicle skidded off near Doodpathri, injuring 8 jawans and 2 SPOs.
  • December 2017, Udhampur: Another vehicle carrying CRPF troops skidded into a gorge, injuring 6 personnel.
  • March 2023, Udhampur: A head-on collision with a truck left 5 officers and troopers injured, this time closer to the Jammu–Srinagar highway

A Nation’s Reminder: Valor, Vulnerability, Vigilance

Every accident involving our security forces is a stark reminder: these men and women stand between stability and chaos. Yet, they face not only violent threats but also the perils of unforgiving terrain.

Thursday’s tragedy calls for:

  • Improved road safety protocols for troop movement
  • Enhanced vehicle maintenance standards
  • Faster emergency response mechanisms in remote areas

This is a solemn call to honour their sacrifice by making the roads they travel safer.
