Tragedy Strikes Jaipur’s SMS Hospital: Fire Claims Lives of Six ICU Patients Amid Alleged Negligence

A devastating fire broke out late Sunday night at the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, resulting in the tragic deaths of six critically ill patients.

The blaze, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in the ICU’s storeroom, rapidly engulfed the ward, filling it with thick smoke and trapping patients who were largely comatose or dependent on life support systems.

The Incident

The fire reportedly began around 11:20 PM on October 5, 2025, in the storeroom of the Neuro ICU, where paper, ICU equipment, and blood sample tubes were stored.

The rapid spread of smoke and fire led to the tragic deaths of six patients, while several others were left in critical condition.

Allegations of Negligence

Family members of the victims have alleged that hospital staff failed to respond promptly to early warnings about the fire.

One relative claimed to have informed the staff about sparks emanating from the storeroom, but was told it was not serious.

Within minutes, the fire broke out, and the ICU was filled with smoke. The relatives accuse the staff of fleeing the scene, leaving patients unattended.

Official Response

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the hospital to assess the situation and has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.

A six-member committee has been formed to determine the exact cause of the fire and to evaluate the adequacy of the hospital’s emergency response protocols.

Political Reactions

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from political leaders.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot termed the incident “heartbreaking” and demanded a high-level probe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and extended condolences to the victims’ families.

Ongoing Investigation

The police and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams are conducting investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and to determine whether there was any negligence on the part of the hospital staff. The findings of these investigations are awaited.

This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about the safety protocols in place at government hospitals, especially in critical care units. The families of the victims are demanding justice and accountability for the loss of their loved ones.
