Uttar Pradesh Government Takes Stern Stance on Unauthorised Drone Use; CM Yogi Adityanath Warns of Strict Legal Action Under NSA and Gangster Act

In response to a growing number of alarming reports regarding unauthorized drone sightings that have caused panic and confusion in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued a strong directive aimed at curbing the unlawful use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The state government has vowed to take uncompromising action against individuals found guilty of operating drones without prior permission, with the Chief Minister clearly stating that such acts could invite charges under the Gangster Act and the National Security Act (NSA).

According to a senior government official, drone operations without proper authorization are strictly prohibited across the state. “There is a complete ban on drone operation without permission, and any violation of this rule will lead to immediate and stringent legal action,” the officer said.

The recent spike in drone sightings in densely populated and sensitive areas has raised serious concerns among both law enforcement agencies and the general public. In multiple districts — including Lucknow, Ghaziabad, and Bareilly — unidentified drones have been spotted hovering over government buildings, near police stations, and even in restricted airspaces close to military establishments.

While no attacks or harmful activities have been reported so far, officials fear that such intrusions could be linked to surveillance attempts, smuggling operations, or efforts to spread mass panic.

Examples of Recent Drone Incidents

  • Lucknow (July 29): A drone was sighted near the Vidhan Sabha complex in the early hours, prompting a security lockdown and the deployment of bomb squads. No suspicious object was found, but the operator remains unidentified.
  • Ghaziabad (July 31): Police were alerted after a drone was seen hovering over a central ammunition depot area. Though it flew away before authorities could apprehend it, an FIR was lodged, and the area was put on high alert.
  • Bareilly (August 1): A drone crashed into a local market area, causing fear among shopkeepers and customers. Initial investigations suggest that it may have been used to record crowd activity during the busy weekend hours.

These events have reinforced concerns about the misuse of drones — whether for malicious intent, spying, or misinformation — particularly when used in unauthorized airspace.

CM Orders Comprehensive Review and Surveillance Measures

Recognizing the potential risks posed by such unauthorized aerial activity, CM Yogi Adityanath has directed the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a statewide review of drone activities. The goal is to tighten existing regulations, assess vulnerabilities, and introduce advanced monitoring systems that can detect and neutralize rogue drones in real time.

Any attempt to spread rumours or create fear in the public mind will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the Chief Minister asserted. He emphasized that misuse of modern technology to compromise law and order is a serious crime and will be dealt with using the full force of the law.

Key Government Measures Announced:

  1. Introduction of Drone Detection and Monitoring Systems: The state government is planning to invest in anti-drone technology, which includes radar systems, jammers, and drone-capturing mechanisms to monitor and disable unauthorized drones flying over sensitive areas.
  2. Increased Patrolling and Ground Surveillance: CM Adityanath has ordered enhanced patrolling across all districts, especially in areas that are considered high-security zones. This includes airports, military zones, and government buildings.
  3. Community Involvement and Reporting Mechanism: Citizens are being urged to immediately report any suspicious drone activity to local authorities. Public awareness campaigns may be launched to educate residents about the dangers and legal consequences of illegal drone operations.
  4. Crackdown on Rumour-Mongering: The government has highlighted that drones could also be used to spread fake news or fabricated visuals via social media platforms. Any attempt to incite public fear through such methods will be thoroughly investigated.

A senior officer added, “The Chief Minister has made it clear that no leniency will be shown towards individuals or groups using drone technology irresponsibly or with malicious intent. Such behaviour poses a direct threat to national security and public peace.

Legal Framework in Place

By invoking both the National Security Act (NSA) and the Gangster Act, the Uttar Pradesh government is signaling that it views unauthorized drone usage as more than just a minor infraction — it is seen as a serious breach of security. These legal provisions allow authorities to detain suspects for extended periods and seize property linked to illegal activities.

The firm stance adopted by the state government comes amid increasing global concern over the misuse of drone technology, whether for terrorism, smuggling, or data theft. While drones have numerous positive applications in fields like agriculture, logistics, and emergency response, their unregulated use has the potential to cause mass unrest or even lead to catastrophic incidents.

As Uttar Pradesh steps up its vigil, other states are also likely to take note, especially with large public gatherings and festivals approaching in the coming weeks.
