In a major push towards transforming the travel experience and boosting infrastructure along its key road corridors, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has rolled out a comprehensive and forward-looking plan to establish 12 state-of-the-art expressway service hubs—also referred to as “e-way hubs”—along two of its flagship roadways: the Purvanchal Expressway and the Bundelkhand Expressway.
According to an official statement released on Wednesday, the blueprint for this mega infrastructure initiative has been meticulously prepared by the Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA).
The master plan is designed to ensure that each hub delivers seamless, integrated, and world-class passenger services, ultimately aiming to revolutionize highway commuting standards across the state.
Major Investment to Transform Highway Infrastructure
As per the proposal, eight e-way hubs are set to be developed along the Purvanchal Expressway, with four major hubs already earmarked for construction at a combined estimated cost of ₹299.18 crore.
Meanwhile, four additional hubs will be constructed along the Bundelkhand Expressway with an investment of approximately ₹126.25 crore, bringing the total expenditure for the project to ₹425.43 crore.
Each of these hubs will be developed on both sides of the expressway, ensuring comprehensive coverage and accessibility for commuters travelling in either direction.
For instance, significant allocations have been made for specific locations, including ₹40.72 crore for the Sultanpur node and ₹30.82 crore for the Banda hub. These are poised to become the largest and most advanced service centers across both expressways.
A Vision for Airport-Like Highway Comfort
The e-way hubs are being envisioned as highly sophisticated, airport-style comfort zones along the expressways, offering travellers a place not just to stop, but to rest, recharge, and rejuvenate in a modern, hygienic, and fully air-conditioned environment.
Each complex will feature climate-controlled interiors, with advanced cooling systems strategically installed in areas with high footfall to maintain comfortable temperatures even during peak travel hours and harsh weather conditions.
Gender-Sensitive and Inclusive Design
The facilities are being designed with a special focus on gender-sensitive infrastructure, making them inclusive and safe for all segments of the population.
Dedicated restroom blocks for men and women will include sensor-operated taps, soap dispensers, anti-bacterial sanitaryware, and a sanitary napkin vending machine, marking a significant step forward in providing dignified hygiene facilities for women.
Additional women-centric features such as nursing rooms, child-friendly washrooms, and dedicated breastfeeding zones will also be incorporated.
These additions are intended to offer greater convenience to mothers travelling with infants or young children, ensuring that the expressway experience is as family-friendly as it is efficient.
Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities
To foster universal access, all e-way hubs will include provisions tailored to the needs of persons with disabilities (PwDs). This includes wheelchair-accessible pathways, holding bars in restrooms, anti-skid flooring, and other elements that enable independent movement and usability.
This emphasis on accessibility reflects the government’s broader commitment to creating inclusive public spaces that accommodate the needs of every citizen, regardless of age, gender, or ability.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond enhancing commuter convenience, the development of these hubs is also expected to generate significant economic and employment opportunities. The construction phase will create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, while the operation of the hubs will spur local enterprises ranging from food courts and retail shops to fuel stations and logistics services.
Moreover, these hubs are expected to serve as catalysts for regional development, stimulating ancillary industries and improving the overall perception and usability of Uttar Pradesh’s growing network of high-speed expressways.
A Step Toward Modern, Future-Ready Infrastructure
Officials say that this initiative is part of the Uttar Pradesh government’s larger vision to establish the state as a national leader in road connectivity and public infrastructure.
With a focus on technological innovation, sustainability, inclusivity, and user comfort, these expressway hubs are poised to become benchmarks in transport-linked urban development.
The detailed master plan developed by UPEIDA ensures that every aspect of commuter welfare has been factored in—from safety and hygiene to accessibility and leisure.
The hubs are not only meant to be stopping points but will serve as multi-functional service plazas that reflect the ambitions of a modern, progressive Uttar Pradesh.
As construction commences, these e-way hubs are set to redefine the concept of highway travel in India, offering a model that other states may soon look to replicate.
