Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed strong confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) performance in the upcoming assembly elections, predicting an overwhelming victory for his party. He anticipates that the saffron party, along with its allies, will secure more than 80 percent of the seats in the state assembly, setting the stage for a dominant political presence.
Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2025, Adityanath elaborated on the BJP’s electoral strategy, emphasizing the party’s commitment to achieving what he termed as an “80:20 battle.” According to him, the ruling party is formulating its approach to ensure that it garners the overwhelming support of the electorate, consolidating its position as the preferred political force in Uttar Pradesh.
“The 2027 election is an 80-20 battle. Eighty percent of the people will be with the BJP and its allies, while the remaining 20 percent will consist of everyone else. You will see, this is the result that is going to come,” Adityanath stated with conviction, underlining his party’s preparations for a landslide victory.
In the last state assembly elections held in early 2022, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive mandate, winning 291 out of the 403 assembly seats. This accounted for over 72 percent of the total seats, reaffirming the BJP’s dominance in the state. Meanwhile, the principal opposition party, the Samajwadi Party (SP), leading a coalition against the BJP, managed to win only 109 seats, highlighting the ruling party’s stronghold in the region.
Adityanath further emphasized that all efforts by the party leadership and cadre are being directed towards achieving the ambitious 80:20 electoral target. “We are moving forward with this goal, and this is the result that will come,” he reiterated, indicating that the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to ensure its continued reign in Uttar Pradesh.
When asked about his political trajectory and whether he considers himself as the heir to the BJP’s leadership in the future, Adityanath dismissed such speculations. He asserted that he remains dedicated to his role as a yogi and a public servant, committed to the welfare of the nation and the people of Uttar Pradesh.
“Look, I am not an heir to anyone. I want to work as a yogi. As a servant of Bharat Mata, I have been given the responsibility of serving the people of Uttar Pradesh, and I am fulfilling my duty in that capacity,” he remarked, clarifying his stance on political ambitions.
Addressing questions about his possible transition to national politics, Adityanath was asked whether he envisions himself moving to Delhi in the future. Responding to this, he reaffirmed his deep connection with his home constituency and spiritual center, Gorakhpur, which houses the revered Gorakhnath Math. “I have already said that I am more eager to go to Gorakhpur,” he stated, signaling his preference for remaining engaged in his current role.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party emerged as the single largest party in Uttar Pradesh, securing 37 parliamentary seats. The Congress also made gains, winning six seats, bringing the total for the opposition alliance under the INDIA bloc to 43 seats. The NDA, on the other hand, suffered a significant setback in the state, with the BJP managing to win only 33 seats, a notable decline from its previous performance.
However, a recent survey conducted by India Today as part of its Mood of the Nation poll indicated that the BJP could stage a strong comeback in Uttar Pradesh if general elections were held at present. This suggests that the political landscape remains dynamic, and the BJP continues to have significant influence in shaping voter sentiments in the state.
